It will soon be a AFC/NFC situation with 2 mega conferences... like it or not (and I don't). The ACC is trying every way it can to implode and the Big 12 is a glorified Conference USA.
Take those teams into the SEC. At least it still makes geographic sense... unlike the SEC going to get Stanford and Oregon St or some nonsense like that.

The Big 10 and SEC are proxy battles for the tv networks — Fox and ESPN. Both are working behind the scenes to make sure the other is blocked from relevant deals, schools, and markets. Since ESPN is already with the ACC and SEC, I think they will fight tooth and nail to keep any ACC schools away from the Big 10, either now (in the event a school finds a way to exit the GOR) or when the ACC deal ends in 2036. Remember ESPN has no Big 10 deal (at least until the next round of negotiations) so any expansion of ACC schools to Big 10 cuts ESPN out.
Fox is also a huge winner in the Big 10 expansion with OU and WU. They don’t have to extend their rights deal with the PAC12 and get just two of those schools (rather than rights fees for 12 schools) at a partial share. It’s just good business. The losers: all the athletes who pull out a map and realize they’ll spend most their time in airports and their families will seldom be able to attend their games.

Many have said this, but if you want the NC and VA markets, NC State and VA Tech make much more sense. VT easily becomes a natural rival with UK and UTK in a way that UVA never would, and NC State fits the SEC culturally better than UNC does, AINEC.
The only benefit to adding UNC is that they can argue with UTx about who is more toxic and unearnedly arrogant.

As a former resident of Durham, I wouldn't.
UNC and Duke is a huge basketball rivalry. For UNC it's behind NC-State in pretty much every other sport.
A lot of the UNC feeling for Duke goes beyond the kind of dislike where you want to beat them at a sport and to the point they want to screw them over and have them in a crappy league to suffer for decades. It's less about beating them and more about wanting bad things to happen to them.
