Not a bad idea. We definitely boat raced LSU last year.

Shone. Was considered a project at best and fell behind Jarrett, Hall and other younger players.

Seems like we are expecting some attrition at WR, too. One or two, maybe? But yes, I think you are right. Somewhere around there.

I would be remiss not to mention the LSU players that have entered the portal:

Walker Howard
Michael Dougherty
Zavier Carter
Kardell Thomas
Damarius McGee
Jaelyn Davis-Robinson
Phillip Webb
Demario Tolan
Antoine Sampah

And more.

What was it you were saying about rats and ships?

You think we were as talented then as we are now? I mean, I loved Mark Richt, but he did not recruit well across the DLine and OLine.

I'm not saying they're on the same level but ya boy acted like Richt was coaching scrubs the way he responded.

I get it. I get his point, too, though. They were good. We typically finished with 10 wins and in the top 10. But the teams now are on a totally different level. We have back to backs and have a shot at a Threepeat. (I think it will be too difficult to get, personally) Richt could nto even get one in the 15 years he was here. There is a big difference in the perception and the outcome right now.....and with that comes expectations. Look at the Alabama fans for an example. They are spoiled and we are beginning to get spoiled.

Imagine if LSU had repeated in 2020 and looked even stronger than they did in 2019, and still had a load of talent. That's where we are right now. (Not better than the 2019 LSU team, but better than our 2017 and 2021 teams.

Kirby paid attention to Player Processing when he was at Bama. What worked for Saban will work for Smart.

How much do the scholarship limits really matter if the NIL is generous enough? The playing time seems like a bigger factor

Nah, it ain’t over. Just layoffs like at any company. That said, they are starting to get outbid more often. If they want to keep their best employees, they best start upping their starting pay.

While I'm sure this is somewhat in jest, there's some truth here.

UGA does NOT pay recruits big through NIL. On the lists of UGA players with biggest NIL deals, the top 10 are all starters. They're guys who got the NIL money through performance, not as an inducement to come to UGA. While UGA has something like 95 guys getting some NIL money each year (yes, even walk-ons), we are not the teams sending out hundreds of thousands of dollars for a recruit... let alone millions like some teams are promising.

Now we do get big NIL deals for those who are starting, and I think we've paid pretty big for portal guys coming in. But we aren't doing that for recruits from all reports.

We'll see how that pans out long term, but I kind of feel like it's the right way to go even if our recruiting classes suffer a bit. Let other schools pay for big name recruits and then have them transfer to UGA when/if they develop, while focusing HS recruiting on the best players who are willing to earn their spot (and NIL money) at UGA.

I'm sure a few guys will take other scholarships (Hope) and NIL.
If they are older players who want playing time, that probably won't be the first approach. Transferring to a smaller school would give them an opportunity to start.

But younger guys who feel they can start with more development (in a year or two as a redshirt senior)... I think the hope scholarship and NIL may fit their needs well.

The biggest name guys seem to want scholarships. I guess it's a "prestige" thing?

But where UGA seems to use the NIL is for the guys on the other end. For example, UGA had a walk-on in Dan Jackson who ended up starting for us some due to injuries at Safety. He had all his school expenses paid for through NIL despite not having a scholarship. I think UGA does the same for other "preferred walk-on" kind of players. No scholarship, but NIL effectively puts them on scholarship. That lets us get past 85.

Some aren’t willing to work hard enough to earn PT against talented teammates.

Some exaggerate their worth/abilities.

Some just aren’t good enough.

Some schools are desperate enough to blow up the NIL market value.
