“The most interesting and shocking nugget that came my way from a well-placed TV insider is that the Big Ten is talking to Georgia Tech. I wanted to discount this because Tech obviously isn’t much of a TV draw and has been on the decline for the past few decades. Apparently, the Big Ten did a deep dive into the numbers, think GT can be relevant again and want to get in the Atlanta/Southeast market. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that Atlanta is in the heart of SEC country. And Georgia Tech is another AAU school, which would keep the academics in the Big Ten happy.”

Tech is a great school, but it was founded by UGA grads and served as the states engineering school for years while UGA did liberal arts and MCG did Medical.

We have started an engineering program and medical, at some point we will dominate tech in that field as well as most professors and students would prefer Athens to the most ghetto part of atlanta.

I believe Georgia Tech leaving the SEC was a huge mistake. Decades ago Tech presidents clearly downgraded football importance and shifted their attention to research money.

So, UGA Athens Revenue is like $800 million and GT is like $2.2B?? A recent article came out with GT responsible for 20% of the $20B economic impact to the state of Georgia.

GT is now the #1 research institute without a medical program. Top DoD research institution.
Atlanta is about to explode. I'm talking insane amounts of money and influence is moving in and it really is ALL due to Georgia Tech.
Microsoft is building a 90 acre campus ONE mile west of GT Campus. It will rival everything but Bellevue/Seattle area. Google is moving their AI hub here. 19 floors and 500,000 sq ft of office in downtown. Cisco is expanding here. SK Innovations is building a semiconductor plant in GA because of the materials technology from a GT professor. That's in addition to their battery plant.

Vince Dooley should have let us return in 1980? How bout now?

UGA has never stood in the way of your return. It was the Mississippi schools that Dodd pissed off that voted no.

I believe we abstained.

Tech is a tremendous asset for the state of Georgia. I’m not sure I understand what you’re referencing in the 20% of economic impact figure. There’s no way Tech is responsible for 20% of the states GDP or 2% for that matter. Are you suggesting 20% if the new economic development?, help me understand that. I’m pro GT. I’m just not sure what value GT brings the B1G when college football is on the eve of outright professional status, and Tech has next to no appetite for their athletic department. Also UGA and Tech are part of the same Board of regents and University system. What benefits one benefits the other. UGA has long been academically relevant and they’ve never needed a huge endowment because of the liberties in the state constitution to levy tax. They have an unbridled tax hammer and the overwhelming political influence to raise billions if they needed it.

lmao. listen man, I'm a UGA fan too, but this makes no sense.

UGA's engineering program is not even close to Tech and will not be for the foreseeable future. Also - have you been to Midtown? It's from from ghetto.

It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Big 10 to poach Tech. There are tons of Big 10 fans in the Metro Atlanta area. It's not really going to get the ratings that you want though and they are a lost cause. They will not put the money into the arms race to actually make them relevant again. They are focused on academics and I don't fault them for that at all. They are a top notch university.

Oh I gotcha…yeah that’s great news. I can believe that. I would support GT being in the SEC. I’m just not sure why they’d want to be in the SEC. I’ve long thought it foolish for them to leave that revenue on the table. Why do you believe Tech has changed their tune?

Have you seen how far UGA has come in 30 years? Many if not most professors would want to live in college towns with fun atmospheres to be apart of....

We have plenty of money and can build amazing facilities. To your point, maybe LGbTQ+ professors would prefer Midtown.

The accusations that downtown/midtown are a dump are terribly false. Atlanta has one if the cleanest/greenest downtowns of any of the top ten US Cities.

Have you ever heard of Techwood? Do you know what happens in Techwood? Do you know why it is called Techwood?

Wut… I know this is going to shock you but most hard skillset students (engineers for example) actually go to school to learn, more so than watch football and be part of the good ole boy network. Most hard skillset professors are the same way. And UGA is a soft skillset school. They have always been a soft skillset school (lawyer, teacher type) as for medical… UGA has a fine vet school but will never replace MCG. Even with the satellite additions UGA will never supplant Tech or MCG.

UGA has its place in Georgia, politicians for instance need either the UGA network or a Ga Southern network. UGAs greatest value isn’t in knowledge but in its frats and sororities. The degree is just a liberal arts degree but the networks matter.

Yawn. Hell the several tech grads in my family are all UGA supporters.

Tech is a great school just shite for culture.

Athens is a far better place for the many who dont want to live in a commuter downtown.

Both can be true L&H. Yes UGA has had a meteoric rise academically the last 25 years and is a top 50 school.

And yes Tech is a world class research university that places very little importance on their athletic department. I don’t think that Tech is a coup for the B1G nor does it move the needle for GT.

If I’m GT I’d just forget it and go full MIT Cal Poly mode and don’t worry about the athletic department. They don’t really need it.
