I expected he would be a serious contender to start this year at Alabama and expect he will be good for BC.

I am too. Eli Holstein transferred out of Bama and did a bang up job at Pitt in his first season. I think Lonergan will perform in similar fashion. That is if Bill O'Brien doesn't screw him up. Billy O gets a lot of credit for being a good QB coach because he coached Tom Brady. But I think Tom Brady made Billy O look like a good QB coach just like Tom Brady made Belichick look like the GOAT. Players matter...

The staff was told a large number of players would leave if Milroe left or didn’t start.

So the other players are watching a better quarterback in Simpson at practice every week but are so hitched to Milroe that they'd rather lose with him?

And DeBoer let the players make that call?

Not only that, but Ty Simpson, who likely got NIL offers from several schools to come be the starter, sat idly by for 2 seasons and didn't transfer while his teammates sabotaged any chance that he might win the starting job. Makes perfect sense.

Eli Holstein was gawd awful once he started playing real teams

Actually, it wasn't because he was facing "better teams". It was because he got injured, and they tried to let him play through it. Then the coach finally decided to bench him until he got healthy.

Probably more true that Milroe was a higher ceiling, lower floor type player and the staff thought he gave them a better chance to win games.

That doesn't mean they were right, Simpson may end up being better.

To me, that makes more sense and is honestly a better look than some grand conspiracy where DeBoer was "forced" to start Milroe.
