Rick Barnes took over and turned around a program left in bad shape at Tennessee.

We gave him hell for his "watermelon rind" comment (see below), but other than that, I always thought he was good coach. The fricking longhorns (lead by DeLoss Dodds and later Steve Patterson) were simply too arrogant to recognize the stability and failed to give Barnes the tools to improve (or, the more likely scenario is that they were all hat, no cattle [spent all their money]).

The guy took the fricking longhorns to 16 NCAA tourneys in 17 years, made the Sweet Sixteen 5 times, made the Elite Eight 3 times, and the Final Four. He was fired for a one-and-done tourney season where his team went 20-14.

The REAL UT recognizes Barnes' ability. They will get him the resources he needs to succeed, which sucks for the rest of us.

Watermelon Rind situation:

As the men's basketball game against the University of Texas approaches, four Texas A&M students, including junior agriculture communications major Chris Shepperd and freshmen industrial engineering major Jose Velez, are coordinating to implement a temporary yell.

The inspiration for the yell came from a discussion on Texags.com, an Aggie fan Web site featuring forums about a "watermelon" quote made by Texas basketball Head Coach Rick Barnes after 2007's game at Reed Arena. Texas A&M won the game, 100-82.

"[Reed Arena] wasn't the loudest place I've ever been," Barnes said in a Longhorn Insider article on MySanAntonio.com.

"[Yells] went out in junior high," he said. "What's next? 'Watermelon, watermelon, watermelon rind. Look at the score board to see who's behind'?"

"I saw people talking about his watermelon quote and asking what we should do about it. So we decided to take his joke and yell it right back at him," Shepperd said. "We were tossing around ideas and hoping that we can create an opportunity to show Barnes just how loud we can be, despite the fact that we started planning things out two days before the game."

Blaming Barnes for last night is just laughable

VOLS lost because they shot under 50% from the line and that goofy arse white for Purdue went unconscious with the circus threes.

I wouldn't blame Barnes for last night, other than his team didn't look ready to play in the first half. But a great season for Tenner. This is who Barnes is, a good regular season coach who has underachieved in the tournament. But if you are TN, he is the best they have had.
