Just not true. First page of Google, national writer Jeff Goodman’s list of potential Avery Johnson replacements included Oats. He was an up and coming mid major coach, which fits the profile for an Alabama basketball hire.
Granted, Byrne does seem to love to quickly hire yankees with potentially ill fitting personalities (Mullen, Oats, RichRod), TBD on DeBoer but he fits the mold.
