Put me down as an Atlanta-ophile. Only been there a a half-dozen times on business, but always enjoyed the trips and found the locals, the hospitality folks and my fellow night spot customers to be very friendly.

And on each trip, I always made it to Decatur to spend an evening at Eddie's Attic, but I enjoyed the downtown, too. But never have seen so many panhandlers. I visited with some of them and found they were mainly Auburn alums.

There is nothing particularly distinctive, unique, historical or interesting about it.

It was the home of the majority of leaders and ideas that created the civil rights movement, is one of the cauldrons of black culture and is the most diverse metro region in the South.

It's also the highest city East of the Mississippi elevation wise and has the largest tree canopy of any large city in the country. It was also the site of multiple large civil war battles and was burned to the ground by Sherman on his March to the Sea.

It's not Charelston or New Orleans, but it has plenty of history and tons of culture.

These are the places most visitors dont visit. The best part of Atlanta are the in-town neighborhoods and nooks and crannies East of downtown and south of 85.

But this just shows that Miami is on par with Atlanta in a global sense. They are polar opposites, and important for different reasons. Atlanta is the capital of the South. Miami is not at all Southern despite its geography.

Yep, agree. Miami is certainly an international city and the gateway to America for most of Latin America, however, nothing about it is Southern.

I don't think anyone would argue it has history and culture. The argument is that it has no personality, and it doesn't have much.

How is Sun Trust Park and area around it? I can't wait to go after I move back.

It's fantastic, and this is coming from a guy pretty opposed to it going there and the whole Cobb thing in general. The Park and the Battery are a total success.

Again, that's an argument made based on the idea that Buckhead, Roswell, Alpharetta and Woodstock are the personality of the metro area.

Little 5, Decatur, Inman Park, Edgewood, Old 4th Ward, The Beltline, Va Highlands, Morningside, Ponce, Reynoldstown, East Lake, etc are bursting with personality and diversity.

It ain't New Orleans, but it certainly isn't boring and hollow like Charlotte.

The movie industry wouldn't go to Memphis or Knoxville no matter how many tax breaks you gave. Do you not think TN has offered tax breaks?

Pretty much every tax break TN offers, which is less than what Georgia or Louisiana offers, and less than what NC used to offer before it more or less shuttered its film industry, is spent filming in Memphis and Nashville. Almost all of the tax breaks go towards filming the show Nashville...in Nashville, but you clearly put in your research.

I feel like a lot of people are sleeping on Memphis because they're scared of blacks or something. It's not the best city in the South, but it's also not some sort of ghetto wasteland hellscape like many on this board portray it to be. There are absolutely bad parts of town, same as any city over 500k people, but, outside of the area around Graceland, there's no reason to spend time in those bad parts as a tourist, or really even as a local unless you're on a food pilgrimage. The gun crime is bad these days, but it's predominantly gangs waging a drug war over the opioid crisis Tennessee (and most of the South) faces. There are some really good museums/a world class zoo. There's a pretty decent music/arts & life scene, a fantastic food scene, and it's cheap as frick. I wanna say it's the cheapest cost of living for a major city in the country, or at least it was recently. There's the Blues, barbecue, and fantastic views of the Mississippi River, and you can experience all three with less than $20 in your pocket

The title of the thread is "Best City". Do a national poll of what city people think is the best city in the SE and see how many votes Nashville gets over Atlanta.

One year Nash Vegas was ranked first nationally as I recall.

Sure, I agree with all that. New Orleans is one of the great American cities in terms of those things.

Atlanta is light years ahead in economics, business, etc, but just in terms of things humans enjoy to experience New Orleans is in a stratosphere with only San Francisco, New York and maybe Miami. It's a fantastic place to spend a few days.

100% agree. Nola is special. Hope they turn it around

That's true and kind of funny as a comparison as Atlanta is the highest city East of the Rockies while New Orleans is the lowest.

I think one of my favorite parts of Atlanta is the combination of exposure to people from different parts of the country/world while still being around lots and lots of good ole Southerners. It's the best of both worlds.

Atlanta folks get mad online defending their city. It's strange

Lol the Mark Twain quote. The Cleveland part of it is the best because it shows how outdated it is. No, every other American city is not an abandoned depressed shithole
