Can't remember what organization did the ranking, but Charleston, SC was just ranked the #1 city in the US and Canada and the #2 city in the world. While it is a beautiful city with a very rich history, I think Savannah, Ga could easily make an argument here.
I have never been to Charleston, but I'd like to visit.

I've got a good spot with some fun folks to tailgate with when you're ready.
Where the lone guy sitting is where our tailgate will be.

Asheville looks nice but all I've heard about it is the crazy hippies downtown.
To be fair I'm more of a Folk music person than Country, but I heard it gets weird there

They're mostly harmless. Just don't feed them or they'll try and follow you home.

Asheville is great, just keep an open mind.

Charleston for sure. Downtown, the beaches, good golf, the food, solid brewery scene.
ETA: I grew up 20 miles south of Charlotte, and while it is a pretty cool place, I don't put it on par with Nashville. It is up and coming though.

Nashville is a nice city. But I also think its far and away the most overrated city in America. People in Nashville act as if their city is growing so fast that its unprecedented. They seem mesmerized by the rapid growth as if its something that's never happened in American history.
And while Nashville is booming, many other cities around the country are experiencing the same thing. Nashville is not exceptional from that standpoint.
In terms of percentage growth, Nashville is just the 7th fastest SOUTHERN metro in terms of growth rate. Growth rate for Southern metros (2010-2016):
19.8%- Austin
15.3%- Raleigh
14.4%- Houston
14.4%- Orlando
13.4%- San Antonio
12.6%- Dallas
11.6%- Nashville
11.6%- Charlotte
9.9%- Jacksonville
9.5%- Atlanta
9.0%- Miami
8.9%- Tampa
6.5%- New Orleans
6.1%- Richmond
3.9%- Louisville
3.0%- Virginia Beach
1.7%- Birmingham
1.4%- Memphis
So yes, impressive growth. But Nashville is no anomaly.
Now if you look at those same major Southern metros ranked in actual growth, its even less impressive (2010-2016):
+852,000- Houston
+807,000- Dallas
+503,000- Atlanta
+502,000- Miami
+340,000- Austin
+307,000- Orlando
+287,000- San Antonio
+257,000- Charlotte
+249,000- Tampa
+194,000- Nashville
+172,000- Raleigh
+133,000- Jacksonville
+79,000- New Orleans
+74,000- Richmond
+50,000- Virginia Beach
+48,000- Louisville
+19,000- Birmingham
+18,000- Memphis
So Nashville ranks 10th of all major Southern metros in terms of actual number of people added to its population since 2010. For every one new person added to Nashville's metro, Houston is adding 4.4. Now that is impressive!
Again, I fail to understand why Nashville people try to act as if their city is experiencing something like nowhere else.
They are all so different, it all depends on what you like. I'd take Charleston followed by New Orleans from a charm, history, and culinary standpoint... If a big city is what you are looking for, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Austin are probably tops.

I've noticed this too, and its growth is nothing to talk about.

Yea - I have nothing against Nashville, it's a fun town with some cool, unique features. But it's not growing any faster than Charlotte and while it has some cool features (the folk/rock/americana music scene for one) it also has all of the nauseating features that come with it's main industry, Pop Country music.

The best answer is don't live downtown in any city unless you just have to for your occupation.

Fayetteville isn't a top 100 metro in population, so it doesn't hit most of these lists. It will be in two years, based on projections.
Actual numerical growth since 2010: 61,828 That's a lot for a small metro area like ours.

I calculated 61,828 for Fayetteville. Regardless, that is extremely impressive. I want to try and get there in August for an orientation/meet and greet.

Your math is right.
We aren't a "real city", and that makes some of the growth here harder for old timers. We're a metro growing out of the middle of nowhere, based entirely on home-grown companies and a university, so that's kind of unique itself.
