They’ve always had the identity of being smash mouth, relying on running the ball and playing defense. However, they were always slow and stiff and would get out matched by talent and athletes whenever they matched up with top notch SEC schools that had the same style of play.
Now they have maintained their smash mouth style, while having the athletes much like we always did in the SEC. Meanwhile the SEC has focused on becoming a hurry up spread em out style of offense, and I believe it has caused a shift of dominance. Much like when SEC used to run over every Big12 team they played. Just my thoughts. Maybe I’m wrong

Let’s see what happens in the coming years. Two decades of dominance doesn’t get erased after 1 or 2 years. The SEC was definitely down this year though.

Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State have always been athletic. There was a period where that dipped in the early 2000s for Michigan and Penn State, but in the 1990s and then again in the last 5-7 years they've always been athletic. The league then added 4 programs that generally have athletes from the West.
I don't think Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Michigan State or even Indiana are any more athletic than they were.

As much as anything coaching is way down in the SEC. Smart has attached himself to Bobo for some reason, Kiffin and Sark cant get out of their own way, Elko is green, Freeze and Kelly are condescending douchbags, Napier might actually be slow, Heupel is 300 lbs and his team doesn’t take him seriously. Drinkwitz is a dork, Pittman is an offensive line coach pretending to be Head Coach, The coaching in this league just isn’t what it used to be.

talent is more spread around. regression to the mean is expected. the SEC had an unprecedented and extreme outlier run from 2003 to 2022. it wasn't like that before and it won't be ever happen again. it's good for the sport to have teams outside the south win.
