Hey I can't change our past, but things change. You go back to 1950, Florida had one of the smallest populations in the SEC. Due to huge amounts of growth (which pretty much coincides with the Florida schools coming into elite ranks), Florida now has more people living there than in Arkansas, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana combined.
And English is a second language below the panhandle.

All too true
And that's where the football players are

I spent a lot of time in Central Florida in the mid to late 80's. Went back for the first time a couple of years back, and felt like I needed a passport.

Good list the one thing I wonder about is Penn State. Currently they pay Joe Paterno about 1 million which is tiny compared to every school on that list. When Joe hangs 'em up I wonder if they'll jump into todays bidding war of coaching.

The biggest difference to me is the revenue and profit the program generates. Texas has been number 1 5 of the last 6 years and this year they were way beyond everyone.
They took in 87 million. 2nd was Ohio State with 68 million. The gap is huge.
In 2007-2008, the top 3 AD earnings were Texas ($120.3 mil), OSU ($117.9 mil), and UF ($106 mil). The profit is a pretty similar pattern. That year however, did not factor in the new SEC money and on top of which UF signed a $10 mil/yr deal with SunSports, so the earnings for UF have increased significantly.

and i am talking about the best "jobs and programs", not recruiting. The name will recruit itself.

But we're just talking about football and not the whole athletic department.
Forbes has Florida listed at number 6 with the profit almost 20 million below Texas.

For a school to have so many great resources, LSU was irrelevant for far too many years in my opinion.
top five coaching jobs =/= relevance
top five coaching jobs + competent coach in said coaching jobs = relevance

The Forbes list that I saw previously was not strictly revenue but it had other factors such as community contribution.
In the 2007-2008 year, UT football had a revenue of $72.9 mil and UF was at $66.1 mil, that is not a huge difference especially when you consider UF's football specific revenue has increased dramatically.

Well I guess it depends on how you describe "top job." For me it would be a combination of how easy I can recruit and win and the salary. History is nice but Florida has been one of the top teams of the last 20 years. They didn't need to dominate the 30's to be ok in that department.
My thought was Texas, Florida, and USC are all in talent rich places, nice weather, big money, and easy to win.
When you're thinking of top jobs imagine taking one yourself. There is no way I would take the Oklahoma job before the Florida job.

He's the 2009 list:
LINK
1. Texas Longhorns
Team Value: $119 million
Profit: $59 million
Head Coach: Mack Brown
Conference: Big 12
Previous Value Rank: 2
6. Florida Gators
Team Value: $88 million
Profit: $41 million
Head Coach: Urban Meyer
Conference: Southeastern
Previous Value Rank: 5
18 million is a pretty big profit difference. They do some manipulation for the value and it's not the revenue number but Texas had 82 in revenue I believe. They're kicking everyones' butts at the moment.

They certainly make a lot of money and spend a whole lot of it too.

5 Ohio State, they are whores, and not worthy of a five. Tell us what this is based on
Let's see:
Great tradition
Great fanbase
One of the top 5 HS football states in the country, and the clear top program in the state, by far (and don't give me any Bearcat BS)
Great facilities
Compared to the SEC, easier conference
Huge athletic department that can spend the $$$$$$$$$$.
But yeah, there's no way at all Ohio State's a top 5 job.

I simply think Texas and USC are more desirable jobs for 2 reasons: location and tradition.
Gainesville is a decent city, but LA and Austin are in a different class, quite frankly.
Believe it or not, winning 50 years ago actually is important. If all things are equal, as you've basically alluded to when comparing Texas and Florida, then tradition trumps no tradition. Think of it this way: a coach who can turn a Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame or Texas into a national champion will have a different legacy than a coach that turned Florida or Miami into a champion. Like it or not, that's just the way it is.

USC is in the middle of a ghetto. I like Austin a lot. I understand LA is a big deal but that campus is in a warzone. USC might be a more desirable job most years but look at the number of people who turned it down this year. Until the sanctions issue is cleared it's not what it was a couple years ago. Tennessee has big money, tradition, etc and look at the number of people that turned it down.

If winning 50 years ago is important, then SMU wouldn't have died. Tennessee would have coaches lining up at the door as well. Florida is a big time job right now.

If you dont think Ohio State is top5, you're fricking retarded, plain and simple.
And that's as non-biased as it gets.
