Tommy Tuberville was "kinda the guy that gave Ed Orgeron his first coaching job"

Yesterday morning, WJOX radio interviewed United States Senator(!) Tommy Tuberville, who was in Birmingham for the celebrity Pro-Am.
Towards the end, it was suggested that Tuberville was "kinda the guy that gave Ed Orgeron his first coaching job."
Tubs proceeds to tell the story, which involves Orgeron being a GA at Miami in the 80s, not being able to understand him on the phone, and him living in Tuberville's apartment.
It's really just a brief snippet, but one I've never heard told before and thought it was pretty interesting.

In his defense, Tubs seems to have around the same IQ as special ed.

Are you saying that we should be seeing United States Senator Ed Orgeron on the horizon?

If you are right, what does that say about Alabama voters who put Tubs in office?

I believe O was an assistant strength coach at Arkansas at the time and he was calling Miami to speak to his friend, Bill Johnson (who ended up being on 2019 LSU's staff) and Tuberville let him know that Johnson had moved on to Louisiana Tech and asked if Orgeron wanted the job.

Nothing good.
But I'm not sure someone from Louisiana wants to throw shade on anyone else's politics.

That's fair.

My sister/cousin/aunt voted for him multiple times down at the First Self-Righteous Church!
ETA: Not the one in Pascagoula, another one

Right, that's sort of the gist of his story, but I didn't realize Bill Johnson was the other GA in question.

There's also an interesting story in how O became the only USC coach retained by Pete Carroll.
Seems O kept recruiting despite the coaching change and met Carroll at a high school game before the hire was announced and Carroll decided to keep him because he was the only one still trying to help USC win.
I believe Shaun Cody was the recruit he was after hot and heavy at the time and he ended up getting him despite the kid's dad wanting him to go to Notre Dame.

So no one read the memo for him and it wasn't in crayon.

You think coaching staffs find out about head coach firings through "memos?"

What IQ does it take to beat Bama 6 years in a row ?

Well I'm not sure how major universities like southern miss handle it.
Either way, seems like special ed didn't get the news, regardless of the method of delivery.

70 or so with the help of NCAA sanctions and some questionable hires.

Why do you think that?

That was a great pull for Orgeron, especially at the time.
Dude was a heck of a player, and was one of their first highly-touted recruits during Carroll's run at USC.
I remember him getting a punctured lung during an NFL game, and coming back on the field to play.
ETA: Looked it up - it was actually a punctured lung from his own broken ribs.
