I think the evidence is clear so far that the bye hurts you more than it helps.

Possibly.

Bama won and they played more recently than OU as well.

So far in the two playoff seasons the only times the team with more time off won in any round was with the losses by Tulane and James Madison (who played in CCG's but lost in the playoff)

If anything, we should know by now 12 is too many but most people are very retarded and will need more teams to figure it out.

Does the NCAA mandate that if you don't have a game for 25 days that you can't have coached practices until 7 days before your next game? Maybe let the teams with a bye continue to practice like they have a game next week even if they don't.

FCS has been doing it for years. I never understood why FBS never adopted that model.
