The playoff system has eliminated all but a tiny handful of potential Natty winners

The current problem is the three top programs in the country are within about 300 some miles of each other. CU in that nothing conference is in about every year. So that leaves UGA or UA or both in most years. Then you have LSU some years. And if Mullen gets UF going you have the Gators. So OK it is alright to go to 8 teams. And give the little kids a participation trophy. Ohio St with the right leadership can be a real threat but ND is never going to win it and neither will any of the other quality B1G schools. Nor anyone in the PAC10 unless USC were to hire Leach and they are not going too. And they can't hire Saban or Dabo or Kirby. OU can win if everything falls right and maybe Texas @ some point. So what you have is this: the playoff system has eliminated most every school in America outside a tiny few BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO EARN IT! Several schools could make a case for getting into a two team deal and get a bunch of turnovers and luck into a W. But two in a row ain't happening. Hell Oklahoma freaking State almost got the press to put them in over a bad arse Alabama that was 4 touchdowns better than they. But the committee ain't regional media. You can't talk our way past them.
So for the immediate future here are the contenders to even make the playoffs:
*SEC
Alabama
Georgia
Maybe LSU
Maybe UF in 3 years
*ACC
Clemson
*B1G
Ohio St
*Big 12
OU
Maybe Texas in 2 years
*Pac10
Nobody
*Independents
Notre Dame
Of those the only ones who can win back to back games are Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio St, Oklahoma. So the next five years or so only five schools will win the natty. Football ain't basketball where a team can get hot. You've got to earn it and have a strong LOS to get in and then win 2. The tounament concept has backfired if it wanted to give more teams a chance to win because now you have to earn it.

Who would have been left out if we still had the BCS?

We know this to be false.

No whine. Stating facts. One of five schools will likely win the next five Natty's.

Point is we don't have the BCS. The press almost got convinced to put Oklahoma St in over a super Alabama football team one year. The BCS was open to that sort of thing ut it is tough to politic your way past the playoff committee. That may change but for the time being they have protocols. Then you have to win 2 tough, tough football games back to back.

That’s not the playoff system.
The entire CFB structure has no parity whatsoever. It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 teams or 16.
Only a handful of programs have any realistic shot at winning a NC
This is why I dislike the playoffs and the devaluation of the bowl system. Not a whole lot to play for for the rest of us.

Are you talking about 2012? Do you not think Ok State would have made the playoffs that year?

It will be over soon. You can thank UCF later.

Other than the schools you listed, how many teams have won a championship in the last 20 years? Florida St is really the only outlier and they will more than likely be back into a repeatedly great team soon (but they also are in that 300 mile area). Like others have said, football is different than basketball but also football is different than it was 50 years ago.

I agree completely.
On the positive side, the current system makes pretty sure that there's not going to be an undefeated P5 team left out of a chance to play for the championship.
That's more than enough since even with a 4 team playoff the rest of the bowls are already seeming more like pre-season NFL games.
The bowls are to the point that "upsets" don't even really register since one just assumes the programs that had playoff aspirations aren't really that motivated and have a few of their best players sitting out to prepare for the NFL draft.

My point is Okie St almost got a one game shot @ ND and may have upset the Irish under the BCS system over an Alabama that was just tremendous. And truly was at least 4 TD's superior to a pretty good Cowboys club. Bama just pummeled ND in the championship game. The press likes underdogs, theories and making story lines. The committee is a show me the facts operation to this point. It may get politically correct too before it is over with. But so far they have tried to put the four best teams in. This year they had to pass on a great Georgia team that improved to the point that they wound up in Clemson, Alabama territory but the Dogs had two losses and OU is a damn good team with one.

I would probably enjoy your rants if you knew how to use paragraphs.

Notre Dame and Oklahoma
BCS job was to have #1 play #2
This year it would be Alabama and Clemson.
I will laugh tho if Notre Dame beats Clemson.

Don't know bout the next 5 years but A&M,FSU and maybe Penn State certainly have the capability to win a NC
Tennessee,Nebraska and Miami won't ever return to their
former glory.

If UCF had won 25 straight in a P5 conference, you'd be the #1 seed. Petition the Big 12 to add you and another school. At least then they'd actually have 12 schools.
To the OP, every P5 school starts the season with the same record. Go undefeated and I guarantee you're in.

Worried about correct paragraph structure on an inane sports board? There's help. Dial 1-800-my arse is so tight you can't drive a ten penny up it.
