I know I'm not paying to watch football games on TV, especially when they still have commercials.

Have you been using an antenna the past 40 years?
Everyone I know has paid for cable/satellite/or a streaming package the past 40 years with commercials.

This "how dare they" mantra seems confusing and revisionist.

I thought your post was going to be about dissatisfaction with the Aggies and you refusing to watch them any further.

No way, man. We have a new coach. This is going to be THE year!

Local stations will be the death of live TV. The insatiable greed knows no end. They are trying to get all the streaming services to pay much more for their local stations as we speak. It's amazing to watch Big Business eat its own. Of course, we are paying for the privilege.

I think I'ma peace out on YTTV/sports altogether soon, b/c CFB is the only sport I will pay to watch and its value is declining by the year. Unless they fix the transfer portal/NIL combo, it will only get worse.

Not to mention getting rid of the rules that made CFB a different game from the NFL, like stopping the clock for a first down.

Yeah at some point piracy or opting out altogether become better options.

Closer to 20 years now.

That's why they frick us, because so many people like your friends are willing to just stick their arse up in the air and ask for it. If people balked at getting charged and getting commercials, they wouldn't be able to do it.

What's revisionist is that when they came out with cable in the early 80s, they told us there wouldn't be commercials because there would be a monthly fee instead. After a few years they sprung the commercials on us. They got away with it because too many American consumers are lazy and just went along with it.

frick ESPN and cable TV.

My question is why do we even have to pay at all when half of the program consists of commercials? Commercials are a way to finance free-to-air programming. I remember back in the day you subscribed to HBO/Max because it had no commercials. That was the model: if it's free, you get commercials. If it's subscription, you get none.

Now all these outfits are double dipping. Charging sub fees and running a shitload of commercials.

Because as long as people are willing to pay for a streaming service with commercials they'll keep doing it. It's smart business on their end but sucks for us. People will always pay to watch live sports and there will always be commercials.

I was young in the 80s.
But the only channels I know without commercials were premium channels (HBO/Disney). M/TV, ESPN, CNN, etc.. all had commercials.

You aren't remembering things very well.
And if you are watching everything on an antenna, then quit your bitching about commercials. You aren't paying a thing for the programming anyway.
