I've never personally known an LSU fan to refer to Tiger Stadium as "Death Valley".

We just call it, "Tiger Stadium".

That entrance is also one of the most overrated spectacles in college sports. I've seen it in person twice now and both were for really big games. I was so jacked up in 2003 ready to experience it the first time and it just...was lame. They touch a rock then run onto the field.

You hate it because you are a UGA fan and a mortal enemy of Clemson..

I like looking at the various entrances...not including Clemson, I think VT's Enter Sandman is pretty damn cool, Tennessee's Rocky Top is good, I like the CU's Buffalo, Boomer Sooner, the Oregon Duck on motorcycle....

Dude..It's college football. You don't see cool shite like that in the pros...I even like the Dirt Peckers 2001 entrance

before sanford switched our home lockerrom to the current west side prior to 2018 our team would come out from the east stands, touch a grante bulldog statue, then run onto the field. That is essentially the same thing clemson does except we ran straight instead of down an incline and our rock was from elberton instead of california.

It's crazy, it's jsut one of those things that seems to get passed on from year to year as just being a known great thing without actually looking at it and being like "hold up, this is it?"

Dude, I'm old enough to remember UGA fans sitting on the train trestle outside the stadium to watch it for free before the enclosed. Those "fans" used to throw rocks at the opposing fans as they entered the stadium. I was 14 in Hershel's freshman year when I first enjoyed that experience...

That's fine for you but it's TV gold. Whenever there's a big game at Clemson the Networks frequently put on a pretty big production and a spectacle that you think sucks...It gets the players pumped, it gets the fans pumped and if a UGa fan doesn't like it I consider that a good thing.

So...do yall beat Clemson or not?

I know the answer to this: y'all lose by 10 and will forever be known as the team who only lost to Clemson by 10 in 2019.

Clemson's Memorial Stadium was built in 1941.

LSU's Tiger Stadium was built in 1924.

Per Wikipedia, Clemson's Frank Howard began to use the term, "Death Valley", in the 1950's.

Could not find a definitive date as to when LSU began to call its stadium, "Death Valley". LSU.SPORTS.NET does not mention it.

Clemson's all-time home record: 316-102-7...75.6% (source: Clemson Media Guide)

LSU's all-time home record: 425-151-18...73.8% (source: LSU.sports.net)

One has to look at the competition through the years...Clemson's playing in the ACC---which has NEVER been a strong football conference---is very much handicapped by poor opponents most of the time.

On the other hand, the SEC has ALWAYS been a strong conference. In fact, EVERY current conference member with the exception of one, has won at least one national championship. Regarding 3 of the original members, Georgia Tech, Tulane, and Sewanee, two of those did not win a national title. That's 14 schools out of 17 original and current members who've won at least one national title.

Georgia fans, who've been to Clemson many times, will tell you that LSU's Tiger Stadium is the REAL Death Valley. No contest.

According to Bud Johnson, the SID from 1966-71, LSU only started calling itself Death Valley after the SEC Tigers swiped it from the ACC Tigers following the two teams’ meeting in the 1958 Sugar Bowl.

Awesome. Beat their arse, won the natty (actually awarded before the bowls back then but whatever) and stole their stadium nickname.

quote:

LSU referring to itself as “Deaf Valley” before it became Death Valley originates from a gas station in the adjacent commercial area not far from LSU’s campus. Crowe Peel, a former LSU boxer and 1949 national champion, named his gas station “Deaf Valley” because of the noise that boomed from Tiger Stadium.

Deaf Valley Shell. It was gone by the time I was an undergrad. It was on the corner of State and Highland down the street from where The Chimes and the original Raising Cane's are today.

Honestly, I think "Deaf Valley" would be a great pairing with "Deaf Dome" but I kinda like that we stole it from Clemson as a FU to them after winning the Sugar Bowl.

For the Clemson fans, just remember imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and be happy in that.

Here is a lovely article from the Columbia paper about Deaf/Death Valley just before the #3 ranked Gamecocks paid a visit which led to this memorable quote by Les Miles:

quote:

"THAT was Death Valley," Miles said triumphantly afterward. "That was the place where opponents' dreams come to die — and it was spectacular." [mic drop]

Death Valley? Deaf Valley? Either way Gamecock dreams are gonna die

how many of those teams finished the season ranked in the top 10?

I legit have no idea whatsoever, genuinely curious.

Clemson has been ranked in the top 10 at the end of the season in 6 of the last 7 years. They have been ranked in the top 5 at year end for the past 4 years.

Swinney has coached Clemson 10 full seasons.

Clemson is 67-7 (.905) at Death Valley under Swinney, including a 35-1 record in the last five-plus seasons. Does that help?

No. It doesn’t. I’m not sure what having that record does to help me understand why they are inside the stadium, go outside the stadium then go back inside. What kind of sense does that make?

Pretty sure he was asking of the opponents played, how many finished 10th or higher.
