Made me proud.

Seriously, I've lived in Missouri most of my life, and it is a really good place to live. Being from southeast Missouri, I consider myself southern. People are friendly, and hospitable. It's not flashy, but it's nice here.
As far as the University goes, we're proud that Mizzou is the oldest University west of the Mississippi River, established the tradition of Homecoming, and has been playing football for well over 100 years. The Missouri-kansas game was the 2nd oldest football rivalry in the country. We're not without tradition and pride, and are excited to join the conference with the most of both!

Missouri still have strong southern ties when it come to race. I've noticed the difference from crossing the state line from Kansas. Also look up "White Man's Heaven". It'll tell you about good Ol Missourah folks.
quote:
Drawing on court records, newspaper accounts, penitentiary records, letters, and diaries, White Man's Heaven is a thorough investigation into the lynching and expulsion of African Americans in the Missouri and Arkansas Ozarks in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Kimberly Harper explores events in the towns of Monett, Pierce City, Joplin, and Springfield, Missouri, and Harrison, Arkansas, to show how post-Civil War vigilantism, an established tradition of extralegal violence, and the rapid political, economic, and social change of the New South era happened independently but were also part of a larger, interconnected regional experience. Even though some whites, especially in Joplin and Springfield, tried to stop the violence and bring the lynchers to justice, many African Americans fled the Ozarks, leaving only a resilient few behind and forever changing the racial composition of the region.

How in the hell is a true blue Yankee like me supposed to look myself in the mirror anymore after coming to this realization?
Ditch the blue pants and jackets, buy yourself some gray threads, sonny. Like it our not, your sorry arse is now part of Dixie, and every ill-informed, uneducated hick from up in Yankee-land will think that Missouri fought with the Confederacy (rather then being a cause of that horribly destructive conflict).
And be sure you understand that the LSU Fightin' Tigers are named after a particularly ferocious, poorly-disciplined group of ragtag misfits from the New 'Awlins area that fought against the Yanks and who Lee's Army of Virginia both admired and hated at the same time. Unlike whatever reason Missouri has adopted the tiger as a mascot (any possibility y'all might change your name to the Missouri "ShowMe's" or something?)

Yep, banned. I think since the Petrino firing incident.
And very, very proud of our state legislature for denying kansas vanity plates. Anything else would be surprising, really, considering the level of hate between us.

Missouri's partisan rangers, especially Quantrill's group, was vicious in fighting Yankees. See: burning Lawrence, kansas to the ground. Missouri's Tiger militia was formed to protect the University from raiders from either side, as it was highly contested territory and both sides were really destructive around here. Our Tigers were more like....military police? Not looking for a fight, but ready to kick arse if anyone started shite.

Think? Many Missourians fought for the Confederacy as well as the Union, and we are represented by one of the 13 stars on the stars and bars.

I just play up the Yankee thing cuz it results in hilarious threads like this one and we all can get a chuckle. In all honesty, I do come from a lineage of the "Southern" settlers in Missouri on my dad's side - they came through Virginia to Tennessee and then on up into MO. I have a great great great grandfather (not sure on the number of "greats" to put in front of it off top of my head) who lived on a hill above a town in western Missouri and his job was to be the "look out" and warn the town below when jayhawkers were riding in from kansas to come and attack the town. In other words my lineage is tied straight to the start of that dreadful conflict you speak of, and on what would eventually become the "Southern" side. But that's just my dad's side - I'm every bit the half breed that Missouri is as a state. On my mom's side I come from German immigrants who settled outside St.Louis and, though they got here after the War, they nonetheless I have no doubt fit just about every "Yankee" definition that is trotted out on here. Such is the half-breed nature of Missouri, hell it even has to be pronounced two ways ("Missouree", "Missourah") to accomodate its half-breediness. You can either use that dual nature to try to fit in with multiple other regions, or you can just use it to frick with people and stir the pot. I've found, thanks in part to help from Sensei, that the latter is a lot more fun on here.
Oh and as semotruman pointed out above, the Mizzou "Tigers" were likewise named after a Civil War militia of sorts. Really just a home guard though to protect Columbia MO, and although they were ready to defend it, they never actually wound up having to be called into action. The people of Columbia take that as meaning that everyone was so scared of our intrepid "Tigers" home guard that they knew not to frick with us...but that's probably being rather kind. It's also entirely possible, hell likely, that nobody really bothered to attack Columbia from either side cuz they had other business to attend to.

Porker and DudeFish dip their sticks in each other's chocolate syrup...often.
"Right there, DudeFish. That's the spot. Now slap my arse and tell me you hate Missouri."

Missouri tiger militia older than louisiana tiger militia. We're the original tigers. Truth.
Now get the frick out, swamp rat.

Anyone is welcome to check my posting history. Just because I efficiently and effectively piss off the Missouri crowd every time I show up in one of y'alls threads doesn't mean that's where I spend all my time.

Bayou, tell me exactly what a Southern accent is? Is it like in Eastern Tennessee, Tidewater Virginia, Low Country South Carolina, northern Mississippi, Uptown New Orleans or the Missouri Bootheel?
What say you?

The Missouri Waltz was nearly banned. They had to revise the original lyrics to make it non-racist.
That is not exactly accurate.
After Harry S Truman became president the state legislature changed the lyrics because Truman did not like them and some believed they were embarrassing to Missouri.

Or Missouri decided to profit off the large number of "true sons" who have defected to the Razorback cause...
I do think it's cool y'all said no to Kansas plates though. frick those guys
