If you have any doubt he would be successful there you just aren't paying attention. Let's not act like LSU was a dominating force in 2000........or 2012

LSU's history and tradition >>>>>>>>> USC's history and tradition...matters for recruiting. Plus, LSU has an entire state to itself recruiting wise, compared to USC that has to contend with Clemson (traditionally a better football program).

Besides, Spurrier changed the conference. How much of the power of the SEC today is a result of the change in offense that he started?

While I respect what Spurrier did while at Florida, you really have to put his dominance into perspective. The SEC wasn't the top dog in college football in the 1990s. Georgia was mediocre, Auburn was crippled by sanctions, South Carolina was horrible, Vanderbilt was even worse, and LSU was going through the absolute worst period in their entire history. Florida, Tennessee, and to a lesser extent Alabama were the only teams in the entire conference who were consistent Top 15 teams. And even as dominant as Florida was, they were consistently the third best team in the state of Florida behind Miami and Florida State.

He turned UF into the powerhouse it is today. There is a reason he's still feared, he's one of the better game day coaches, though his temper can get the better of him. He revolutionized the SEC and the way it played football. I can't think of another coach in the history of the SEC that forced other teams into a new style of play.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Bobby Dodd of Georgia Tech.

He may have been Gen Neyland's equal.

An intersting thread would be to name the best HC of each SEC school. A few names may be mentioned twice...

Spurrier only won 1 national championship to go with that boatload of SEC titles.

Saban has 3 championships with two schools, and possibly four.

I like Spurrier but I think it depends on how you measure greatness.

Marino or Elway?

For example.

Spurrier was a revolutionary and charismatic figure and absolutely dominated the SEC while at Florida.

I would use a different example.

Saban = Vince Lombardi. Has won a ton of championships and completely dominated in a short period of time but doesn't have much longevity.

Spurrier = Don Shula. Has only one or two championships but has a ton of conference championships, a lot more wins, and far better longevity.

Saban also didn't have the luxury of coaching the SEC in the '90s when the second best coach in the conference was Phil Fulmer.

Curley Hallman begs to differ, sir.

Should have been focused on winning the SEC instead of supervising the China-Burma-India Theater, amirite?

So, Bryant won 5 straight SEC titles.

Spurrier won 4 straight.

Pat Dye and Neyland each won 3 straight.

No one else has ever won 3 straight. Correct?

You won't find a person on the planet who hates UT more than me...but you have to give that to Gen. Neyland. His win streak was interupted by WWII.

WWII.

World.

War.

Two.

Bryant = clear #1. His domination of the SEC was incredible over a long period.
