However Derrick Thomas did win games at Bama almost single handedly. In 1988 he had 9 Qb hurries, 3 sacks and a safety against penn st in a game alabama won 8-3

Remind me again how many points Derrick Thomas scored in this game. Unless he had 2 safeties which would be 4 points or returned an fumble or an interception for a TD. Then I don't think he single handedly won this game.

We get it and all of us agree that DT was one of the greatest defensive players in the SEC of all time. No one is trying to take that away from him. But just stop with the greatest player of all time in the SEC.

An argument can be made for him as well as several others. There can never be a definitive GOAT in SEC football because there are just too many variables. But please stop acting like offense is the only facet of the game.

Nobody said offense was the only side of the ball. But when a running back typically touches the ball between 20 to 30 times a game. They are Naturally going to have more of an impact on more games than a LB.

The Heisman is generally considered the best college football player for that year. How many defensive players have won the Heisman. Where did Derrick THomas finish in the Voting. Bo Jackson and Hershel Walker both won it. Hell the best Thomas did was 10th. If he was generally considered the greatest player in SEC history he would have at least finished in the top 3.

Derrick Thomas was one of the greatest SEC defensive players of all time but doesn't belong in the discussion for greatest SEC players of all time.

Being a KC native and Chiefs fan, I concur. There was nobody quicker off the ball and into the backfield than DT.

He is a legend in KC.

A running back is only as good as his blockers.

Only a fool would use the Heisman Trophy as a barometer of how great an individual player is. Can you honestly say with a straight face that you believe players like Pat Sullivan and Mark Ingram to be better overall players than Derrick Thomas?

He's not getting that point, trust me. He seems to think that since it's "obvious" to people caught up in Heisman hype, then it's "obvious" to everyone.

Okay Start a poll on any board you want to and put up Derrick THomas against Bo Jackson and count the votes only Bama and AUburn don't get to vote who do you think wins this poll and if you say Derrick Thomas we know who the fool is. Hell Derrick wasn't even the greatest ever defensive player in the SEC.

Great player! Congratulations to Bama fans. If I'm starting an SEC team with one player I'm taking Reggie White...and I'm no Vol fan.

I am not making the claim that Thomas is the greatest SEC player of all time. I just don't think it's so outrageous that it's laughable. If you want to equate your football acumen with popularity and hype, that's your right.

By the way, if you're going to go off of straight stats and impact, Tebow smokes Walker. (I think Hershel may be the greatest college player ever, personally, but I'm not the type of stooge that uses Heisman voting to determine the greatest player.)

DT is not "one of the best defensive players in sec history" he is the best defensive player in sec history. But I have no problem with a offensive player being considered the best.

I've seen alot of lists of top ten SEC players of all time and not just solely basing my choice on the Heisman. And you know what I find on almost all of these lists. Hershel Walker and Bo Jackson. You know who isn't on there so much, Derrick Thomas.

It was a dumbass Alabama fan who started this Derrick Thomas as the greatest SEC player of all time, If he had just started a thread about him finally making the hall everything would have been great.

Tell you what you do Check out any list you can find and I'll bet you want find one out of a hundred with Derrick Thomas above Hershel or Bo.

Now who is the stooge.

Their selection process is a joke. Tommie Frazier and Danny Wuerffel didn't get in until last year.

this ... i don't look at this as some huge accomplishment simply because his (and others) lack of inclusion makes the process a joke ...

feel the same way about the baseball hof ...

they're jokes ...

SHow me a poll with anyone voting other than strictly bama fans with Derrick Thomas as the greatest SEC player of all time and I won't post in this thread again. And by poll I mean legitimate not one bama fans create in their minds.

I'll hang up and wait. What is laughable is Bama fans can't accept that he doesn't even belong in the conversation.

ANd fYI Reggie White was better than Derrick Thomas.

I like Derrick Thomas a lot, and he was a complete stud. I am a much bigger fan of him than I am of Bo Jackson, but there is no contest as to who is the better player of all time. As UGA fans we understand how important defense is because Alabama wins championships with it, while it has cost us from competing the way we should over the last 10 years. I think Thomas is probably the best defensive player, but Reggie White was also great. However, when you compare the two of them to Bo and the impact he had on the game it isn't as close as it should be because offensive played can make a bigger impact. I didn't include Herschel, because I understand that comes off as bias, even if he was arguably the greatest college player ever.
