You would have had to have watched the movie. Joe Dirt was a Def Leppard fan, wore the shirts, and his rival, Kid Rock, was making fun of him for that and for supposedly losing the girl of his dreams.

It was a kind of funny movie, it had some good parts, when it came out. Like all old movies, it is kind of dated now.
It's no intellectual powerhouse, more of a lowbrow laugher but, okay.
Another funny part was when the coonass from Waterboy had an interaction with Joe Dirt.

Another good part is the popular "It puts the lotion on its skin" scene when Joe Dirt finds himself in the lair of a serial killer in his search for his long lost parents.
