Got curious and visited the college baseball reddit. Was quickly reminded why I hate reddit. That place is just sad.

I may have missed this, but are fielders allowed to use the green safety bag to record an out? I thought there was a call last week where the fielder touched the green bag, but the runner was safe.
On that last out, the dropped strike 3, the first baseman took the throw with his foot on the green bag.

If that’s the case, everyone in the stadium missed that then. I rewound just to be sure.

Ben McDonald is so good at calling college baseball.

Maybe it swaps if the catcher is having to throw from foul territory? No clue. The whole thing is stupid. First I've seen that this year.
I've definitely seen runners called safe because the first baseman was touching the green bag instead of the white bag though. My understanding was that the green bag basically doesn't exist from the fielder's point of view, then once the runner is on base it's out of play completely.

Chat GPT knew
General rule
• On a typical force-out play (i.e., fielding a ground ball or catching a throw from the infield), the defense must use the white base, while the runner must use the colored bag (green/orange) to be safe ?.
?
?? Exceptions where a fielder may legally use the colored base
1. Dropped third strike (uncaught third strike):
• Either player (fielder or batter-runner) may use either base.
• This flexibility is allowed to help avoid collisions if the play is drawn toward foul territory ?.
2. Play “pulled off” into foul territory:
• If the fielder is forced off the white base into foul territory (e.g., chasing a ball or throw), then:
• The batter-runner may use either bag to avoid collision,
• But the fielder must still touch the white base to complete the force out

So from a fielding perspective, only on dropped 3rd strikes.
Makes sense I guess. I just hate it in general.

They stopped play to award the runner the bag he was already on.
Thanks ump.

Throw that fan out the game for touching that double. I never understood why people attend sporting events if they don’t know the rules

The green bag is for the runner only

Found this…
quote:
Exception 1—On a dropped third strike, the fielder and batter-runner may touch either the white or colored base. After a dropped third strike, if the fielder is drawn to a position in foul territory on the side of the colored base to receive a throw, the runner may touch the white base in order to avoid a collision. Normal running lane restrictions still apply.
ETA I’m old and slow with the interwebs and replies.

The outfield at TD Ameritrade is massive. Always surprises me when I see it.
