In 1921, Texas and Vanderbilt start a series which was played at the State Fair of Texas every year from 1921 to 1928 with the exception of 1924. Texas is 3-8-1 against Vanderbilt although the two teams last met in 1928. In 1929 Texas started playing Oklahoma annually in Dallas.

Texas is clearly scared of Vanderbilt. They couldn’t handle losing in their own state fair, so they went out and found a pushover that they could beat more times than not...
1 + 1 = 2
1 + 1 = 2

The actual reason is simpler..
OU and others formed the Big 8 in 1920 and they weren’t allowed to play neutral site games. That changed in 1929.
Between 1900 and 1923, Texas played OU in Austin, Norman, Houston and Dallas. Texas and OU did not play each other fro 1924-1928.
The series resumed when Texas athletic director L. Theo Bellmont signed a 10-year agreement with Oklahoma to replace Vanderbilt as Texas’ annual opponent at the Dallas State Fair. “We couldn’t get anybody else,” Bellmont said later.
I had never read that last part before.. I think it is saying Oklahoma is the only team that would agree to play there.. Funny how it worked out all these years later.
Then again.. most everything great happens naturally..
