“What gives” is they wanted Michael Earley. The folks who matter didn’t consider hiring him settling. Opinions will undoubtedly vary, but I for one (a worthless metric, I know) am very pleased.

There was clearly a time crunch as a result of the ambush. And the transfer portal.
But another aspect is the consistency within the program, continuing good vibes, and good karma.

Dabo about the only one that worked

Not to mention the guy certainly had knowledge of the Texas move weeks ago.

Why did it have to be someone with head coaching experience?
Vitello had none when he was hired. Wes Johnson had none when he was hired.
Kendall Rogers mentioned the other day that there seems to be two paths when it comes to SEC baseball hires. An established head coach (Jay Johnson, Schloss, etc) or a dynamic recruiter with a good staff around him (Vitello, Johnson).

And maybe that little midget and his helicopter mom can stop crying about having to bunt (a tactic that worked well).

I would rather have a championship coach than hire a nobody to keep a player happy

Earley only has 1 year experience as a paid assistant coach
This appears to be a big gamble. I think a few days ago we all would have been shocked to learn that A&M was hiring someone with no head coaching experience considering how attractive the job is

That’s one opinion—and you’re certainly entitled to it.
It could very well be that the PsTB concluded short-term issues (i.e., player stability) more urgently required their focus than did a so-called sexy, big-name flex.
Again, current players (more trickling out by the minute) are pleased:

A week ago we all would have expected A&M to lose our entire roster.

Most definitely but you have to assume the contract is built that they will have the ability to pivot quickly if it doesn’t work out.

Hiring an assistant within to save one years wroth of players is not the right move. Period
If you think Earley is the answer then hire him. Doing it to save one year is not worth it and time and time again this has been proven
LSU proved it TWICE it’s stupid

I would not assume that. A&M is frickign terrible with contract terms.

Also A&M fans are assuming everyone stays after this but it’s a little early for that. Wouldn’t be surprised if dudes still hit the portal after further reflection
They want to be developed and play winning baseball. Earley’s lack of experience could be easily recruited against by opponents.

Earley was the most loved assistant on our staff. He will be a players coach, and needs a strong staff. Don’t want Weiner, because all our pitchers pledged to stay when he left.
We will see his staff …

We had a marquee coach.
It was our 1st base player-coach that gave the signal for the Chestnut bunt.
Experience and name is great, but those guys get complacent too.
