This is the truth. Memphis has Memphis locked down right now and takes who they want.

Look, I'll give you Arky. They're "new" to the SEC but do have a good history in basketball.
My point is, UT is not an obviously better job than Bama. After UK, and I guess Arky, the next level is highly debatable, and Bama has as much argument as any other team.
I'm talking about history, fan support, money, recruiting base, etc.
it becomes pretty subjective when you say "obviously better" instead of "better"
But IMO UT is a better job than Bama when it comes to basketball
Mostly based upon how well they have supported their team lately... I guess maybe because they have had a great women's program and with UCONN dominating now their basketball fans have been looking for another outlet for their interests

We'll pay more than any school on that list.
Tennessee's obsession with throwing money at its recruiting problems seems to be a disease without a cure.

BTW, you are very delusional if you think Memphis won't cherry pick who they want and don't want

As long as Memphis is good they will own the city. If the team drops off then it becomes free game for the SEC teams that recruit there. For now, Pastner isn't losing anyone he doesn't want.

You can certainly argue this point and be right. What I and other Bama fans take exception to is that this is supposedly the case when BOTH teams are successful. In other words, does Alabama routinely pack the house out if Anthony Grant goes on the same run at Alabama that Pearl did the last few years at Tennessee? I contend that this is exactly what would happen at Alabama as well. You and others seem to insinuate that Alabama doesn't pack it out because none of them care about basketball in the first place while we contend that all we need is a effective coach that wins at a reasonable level and we support the program just as well as Tennessee fans would.

This year Alabama and UT had pretty similar seasons... and UT averaged about 6K more fans per game

I don't think i said that
I did say that schools like Bama, UGA, and LSU are football first and basketball a distant second in fan interest.
But that is just acknowledging the obvious IMO

as far as attendance goes, of course Tennessee is going to draw more, they can fit 5 or 6 thousand more in. We are just like almost all SEC schools, fairweather as hell, but from the Kentucky game on we had good crowds pretty much every night and had 6 or 7 sell outs.

And they were on a 5 year run while Bama was rebuilding. Is it really surprising they had more fans at games?

Well they do have an arena that seats about 5,000 more than Alabama so that's a contributing factor. The attendance is a bit understanding to. After all, Tennessee was coming off an Elite 8 run the year before with several starters back and a nice home OOC schedule. Meanwhile, Bama's coming off a losing season with an absolutely horrendous home OOC schedule. The circumstances for each team going into the season couldn't have possibly been more opposite.
Once Alabama started showing a pulse early in the SEC conference schedule, Alabama fans showed remarkable fan support. How many other SEC school's arenas were 93% full on average throughout the entire SEC schedule?

the second people start winning in a sport they care about... seats get filled
If anything you might argue this was a pretty down year for UT compared to recent years (and they might have been expected to show more poorly)... whereas Bama had better results than they have had lately (so the fans were probably more excited overall than UT fans)

Tenn, under normal conditions, is a great basketball job. Under current conditions (pending sanctions that will likely be a little worse than UT fans try to tell you), replacing likely best coach in school history, etc. means it is not a great job.
UT is not getting any of the top 3 on that list b/c Pitt is a better job, the guy at Nova would fit in in Knoxville about like carrythefight at a mensa club meeting, and Grant is one of top 10 paid coaches in country already. Tide wont get outbid on a coach they really want. Period.

if it's about ego I agree
But UT has apparently turned into one of the major money makers in college basketball over the last few years
So it would be easier for them to make a rational decision to pay a basketball coach more at UT than at Bama IMO

Tennessee didnt even pay Pearl more than Bama paid Grant. What makes you think they would pay Grant more than Bama pays (or wld pay) Grant?
Posted on 3/23/11 at 1:09 pm to bamasgot13
Because we will. But not for Grant. He is down our list a bit.

Jamie Dixon? Really? So UT just wants to get put out in the first rd. of the NCAA tourney every year?
In all seriousness, Dixon or Wright would be great for the SEC.

Jarnell Stokes is a top 10 national player out of Memphis next year.
Cam Clear is his best friend, his brother is already enrolled at UT, and whenever he talks about the Vols he says "we." Pastner has to fight with Tennessee to get recruits out of Memphis.
A lot of people were saying Adonis Thomas was all UT, until the NCAA stuff came out.
