(1938,1950, 1951, and 1998.)
In 1938 and 1950 a majority and plurality (respectively) of Selectors/Polls picked the VOLS. Specifically 9 selected the VOLS in 1938 and 5 in 1950. Tennessee has enjoyed 11 undefeated seasons of which 7 of those seasons included a tie. Evidently before the 1970s bowl losses were not counted on the record. That would give Tennessee another 4 undefeated seasons for a total of 15. Tennessee is 2nd in the SEC only to Alabama in all time winning percentage. Please see the links for more info.

38, 51, 98 are consensus. I think OU has a better claim and more polls in 1950, but that’s arguable

That was the year the polls were done then UK beat OU for their first loss in like 2 or 3 years. By modern standards UK probably gets to claim 1950 and I think Maryland in 1951 were the 2 teams that forced the polls to no longer vote at end of regular season and to do the final poll after the end of the post season.

1950
#7 Kentucky beat #1 Oklahoma in the Sugar 13-7
#4 Tennessee beat #3 Texas in the Cotton 20-14

1951
#3 Maryland beat #1 Tennessee in the Sugar 28-13

But yet the 1939 team didn’t give up a TD all year. And was left off. We will stick to what we claim and that is 6.

I guess if they won’t turn the spotlight on you, you yell for any spotlight you can get.

Correct. By today's standards UK would be the 1950

In 1939 you lost 14-0 in the bowl game...the last game you played that year.

In 1950 it was losing to MState 7-0
In 1951 you lost 28-13 in the bowl game.

Yes, they did. They gave up 14 in the bowl game. Don't rewrite history.

ETA
1939 Tennessee played 4 teams that ended the season with a winning record and none ended the season ranked except 1. That was USC and USC beat Tennessee.

Georgia can legitimately claim at least 6 football titles (1927 -- most wins of all those voted #1 that year; 1946 -- only perfect season of those voted #1 that year; 1942, 1980, 2021, 2022).

I, however, throw in our other two unclaimed titles in which UGA was voted #1 by at least one selector: 1920 & 1968.

BTW....UT claiming 1967 with 2 losses is equivalent to Bama trying to claim 1941, also with 2 losses. But, the ultimate blame lays with the poll selector. Still --- where is your dignity, Tennessee & Alabama???

Also, Maryland would kick Tennessee out of their 1951 claim
