Dan Heefner

I get that he doesn’t coach at a traditional powerhouse university; but how much of a factor is that in collegiate baseball, where the best of the best enter the MLB draft?

Year after year DBU produces great teams.
By all accounts, Heefner is one of the game’s offensive gurus.

Is it his résumé?

Just curious what some of y’all think.

Dan Heefner enters his 17th season with the DBU Baseball team and 14th year as the Patriots’ head coach. Named the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Dan Callahan Coach of the Year and a two-time recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association Midwest Region Coach of the Year, Heefner has guided the DBU Baseball program to the NCAA Regional Tournament nine times, including eight of the last nine years. Under Heefner's leadership, the Patriots are also one of just nine teams in the country to reach the NCAA postseason each of the past six seasons.

In 13 years at the helm, Heefner owns a career record of 485-253 and his .657 win percentage ranks 13th best among all active NCAA Division I coaches. Dating back to the 2015 season, when the Patriots hosted the Dallas Regional, Heefner has guided DBU to 229 victories, a mark that ranks as the seventh-highest win total among the nation’s 301 NCAA Division I baseball programs.

During his tenure as the head coach at DBU, Heefner has produced 17 All-Americans, a mark that ranks as the eighth highest total in college baseball dating back to 2009, as well as 13 Freshman All-Americans. Heefner has also coached 58 players that have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft and seven that have reached the Big League level.

Prior to and since taking over as Head Coach, Heefner has developed DBU into one of the most powerful offensive teams in the nation as the Patriots’ hitting coach. As a result of his leadership, DBU has inserted itself into the college baseball spotlight by ranking in the top 25 nationally in 83 offensive categories dating back to 2005. Widely regarded as one of the top hitting coaches in the country, Heefner has presented twice at the American Baseball Coaches Association national convention on hitting and has also presented in Europe, Canada, and numerous state conventions on hitting and building team culture.

They haven’t endowed me with that power yet.

As for who else we can get ... remains to be seen.

I’d be great with Heefner.

I would fully expect Rice, Houston, maybe Arizona St to all take a good look at him. Then once A&M and Lsu make their hires, the new potential openings might give him a look. Especially, TCU. I'd put Heefner as a better hire over Saarloos.

I would too, though you’re the first person I’ve seen say it.
I like Saarloos, but people are talking about him like he’s the Frogs’ sure thing.
Heefner is a huge opportunity for anyone.

An Omaha program that just hasn't gotten there yet
What kind of dumb shite statement is this? If they are an Omaha program, they would have been there.

I assumed he was saying they should finally get there this year.
But I could’ve read it differently.

Honestly, there are a LOT of good options out there this year which show tremendous upside. I would put Heefner on the same level as Godwin, and possibly Bakich. That is why I'm not worried who A&M gets - they are going to have some capability regardless of who is hired

But it does look like unless Bjork changes his mind, A&M is getting Schlossnagle

DBU is like the little engine that could. Only 2,883 undergrads.

This is it:

No Football. Everything but baseball is D2.

But Dan the man Heefner has taken them to regionals 10 times in 14 seasons (13 without the Covid year). This is his 2nd Super and has a fair shot to make Omaha for the first time.
