Saban is most successful at the dominant state program - Mich St was too much in the Michigan shadow and always will be. Bama will always be top dog in that state as will LSU.
Ole Miss will never totally separate from MSU and same thing with S Carolina and the problem is those states do not produce talent for both teams. On top of that, bigger programs go into those states and cherry pick.

so what? 10 years ago he turned LSU from a losing team to a winning team, 9 years ago into a SEC champ, 7 years ago a SEC and NC
He was the same guy

No to South Carolina but I think he could win one at Ole Miss especially in a down year for the SEC West. There is a lot of talent in the state of Mississippi and I feel like they could be really good with the right coach.

Really? Were your job skills exactly the same 11 years ago as they are today? Just apply common sense and you can plainly see that he has progressed as a coach.
By his own admission, his concept of focusing on what is now known as "The Process" started in 1998...he has refined and expanded that concept into the machine it is today.

why didn't he stay at Mich State then?
the answer is he wanted to win at the highest level and there were better places to do that

yeah, to win at miami
I don't bear him any ill will really. I wish he would have decided to leave a few weeks earlier if that's what he wanted but he was entitled to try his hand in the NFL

True about Michigan State always being in Michigan's shadow but remember, Michigan State was on probation with a lot of scholarships taken away when Saban came in and the Big Ten was probably the best football conference in the land during the late '90s. And Saban actually did a great job recruiting at Michigan State. He signed players like Plaxico Burress, Renaldo Hill, Robaire Smith, Julian Peterson and Sedrick Irvin among others. Michigan State just didn't have the depth to compete because of the scholarship restrictions and as you said being second fiddle to the Michigans and Ohio States of the world. Saban inherited a program that was in tatters with a lot of disadvantages in recruiting and turned them into a top 5 team within five years. And he never had a losing season at Michigan State which is a worthy accomplishment when you look at how tough their schedules were during those years.

True.
He didn't win one at Michigan State and he was there for five seasons. Michigan State's program historically is just about on par with Ole Miss. They haven't been to as many bowl games, but prior to the 70's, the Big 10 only sent one team to bowl games (Rose Bowl) each season.

He left Michigan State because their dumbass administration wasn't willing to give him and his staff a raise when the Spartans were having a great season in 1999. Saban also wanted the football facilites to be upgraded so it could be on par with the top programs. The athletic department had cold feet about that as well. What coach in their right mind would stay at a situation like that?

yep, because not everything is equal and Mich State as they were did not allow him to compete/win at the highest level

I got discharged in SC, hard place to recruit .

Bottom line is, Saban is probably following the pattern set by Phil Jackson of the NBA. Never take a team that doesn't already have the raw tools to be a champion. Personally, I think that philosophy shrinks the playing field considerably in terms of jobs he would take beyond Alabama.

Anyway, why do you ask? Is the scuttlebutt that he's already getting bored at Bama?
