Birmingham metro is about the same size as New Orleans metro. True that Birmingham is not like New Orleans, no pro teams, etc., but it is about the same size as a metro area.
Before Katrina, New Orleans had 455,000 in the city itself. It has something above 300,000 now. Birmingham proper has about 230,000.
Metro New Orleans has just over 1 million and so does metro Birmingham.

I live in Mississippi and work HS football, there's very little talent compared to Louisiana.
Per capita Mississippi has more players in the NFL than any other state. Sounds like excuses for his team to me.

On Saturdays when Auburn and Alabama are both playing at home (usually 3 times a year), 4%+ of the state's population is in or just outside of the two football stadiums. Most are attending, but thousands more are working in support of the games. Probably no other state has such a high percentage of its population attending football games. Mississippi would be close.

Not to mention LA is right behind.
As far as rabid fanbases are concerned, TX is #1 by a looooooooong way.
Again, however, if you look at how this poll was conducted, you'll see why it really isn't very credible.

What's the criteria for this list? The fact that Texas isn't No. 1 is probably the biggest joke of them all.
****
well I guess I can believe the list now.

I agree. They have a damn tv show and many of movies about the passion of high school ball, and the crop of players (especially QB's) that come from there. Texas hands down.

I vote this tread to be locked on the basis of there are too many people too stupid to realize the premise of this ranking.

I said this in the OT it is based on how many people post about football on facebook not exactly a legitimate source..
Is it possible that some people have a signature containing the word "football" which is skewing the results for some states?
All of you are getting too worked up about a poll. Especially you LSU fans. It's a poll based off false pretenses. Chill.

and by God.. we're proud of it.
RTR (it's one thing i can say i'm damn proud of as far as having Auburn down there. we -love- football.)
This is the same in Arkansas, except we onyl have the one school with the whole state pretty much to itself.

Please dont put this garbage on the sec rant, keep it on the ot because it is based on absolutely useless and irrelevent information.

Bama, Okie, Miss & West Virginia.
