Being ranked #1 for a short time means just as much to y'all as actually winning a championship.

There are three types of Mississippi State fan, and they interact together and scheme against each other. There has been one time in recent history where there was unity, and it was when Mullen was 2-0/3-0 against Ole Miss.
Here are the subsets of the fanbase:
Group One: The Loyalists/Old-Timers
These are the fans that will bitch about everything and only care about beating Ole Miss. Do we need a new coach? Need to look in the MSU family. Rockey Felker would be a good one. The exception is that they love Jackie Sherrill, because he got a rise out of Ole Miss.
We're going to build the pinnacle of college baseball stadiums? Well, I might lose my seat and its not fair that I have to pay more than I committed to in 1985. These fans are likely to make posts complaining about rap music or younger fans standing at a football game. I read one occurrence on an MSU board about MSU fans complaining to the point where another MSU fan was escorted out.
This group loved Mullen when he started out 3-0 against Ole Miss. But now that he is 4-3 and getting his arse kicked on the field and on the recruiting trail, he's not as popular with this crowd.
What they wear: Vintage MSU gear with the walking bulldog or the "MSJ" logo.
Message Board of Choice: Gene's Page
Favorite Moment: State 6, Alabama 3
Why they matter: A segment of this subset has the money.
Group Two: The Realists
This is probably the biggest group, but most of this group is in the young family stage, and doesn't have a lot of income to throw at athletics outside of season tickets.
These fans appreciate what Mullen has done. Maybe they are disappointed about an 8-4 season this year, but they know it could be worse. They remember the Croom error and the shitshow that was Jackie's final years.
This group also goes with the flow - they know that its rare for an MSU team to be highly ranked in any sport, so they enjoy it. This group is largely alumni, moreso than the other groups. They have seen not only the improvement of MSU from an athletic standpoint, but have been beneficiaries of MSU degrees.
What they wear:The latest adidas coaches polos with the current logo
Message Board of Choice: Six Pack Speak
Favorite Moment: The 1998 SEC West Championship/1999 season
Why they matter: The largest group, and one that hopefully represents the future.
Group Three: The idiots.
Thank goodness this is the smallest group, but they are certainly the loudest. Fire Mullen is their battle cry, or at least, who cares if he leaves. This group is the anti-realist, and they believe that MSU should be competing for SEC and national titles every year.
The rise of message boards and social media has impacted this group the most. As you can imagine, this group is mostly under 30 (with some notable exceptions). They hate Ole Miss with passion like the first group, but don't accept that 1-11 with a win over Ole Miss is a good season
This group also cares more about recruiting than the other groups. Is there an MSU fan stalking 17 year old high schoolers on Twitter? You'll probably find them on Elite Dawgs.
What they wear: T-shirts. Bonus Points if they say frick the School up North
Message Board of Choice: Elite Dawgs
Favorite Moment: Being ranked #1 for five weeks in 2014
Why they matter: They don't. But they are so loud that most people think they do.

You have to remember that the majority of what you read was probably drunken melting. In all honesty, no one WANTS him gone. But if he were to leave for another program, I do think he'd be replaceable due to the program not being the complete shitshow it was in 2008. The school can definitely pay more for a coach than it used to prior to Mullen.

You are correct. I am an alum. I would be in group two except my family isn't real young, married 23 years two kids 18 & 14, but you are right on. I wear the coaches polo and those are my favorite moments as well as Six Pack Speak. Good job you nailed it. I know people that fall in all three.

At least you see it too.
A unified MSU fan base would go a long ways in recruiting.

No.. I have seen a lot of posters here fighting. This isn't a loss thing.

I don't think a single state fan wants Mullen gone. I hope we sign him to a lifetime contract and could give not a single shite if he ever wins an egg bowl.
Ok well maybe one or two shits. But if it's the only loss of the year then nah, no shits.

Well put. I visited the last one and found the nest. You guys need to fumigate! EliteDawgs is on the side of... stupid? Unreal.
Since when has State fans become internet rumor junkies. It's like their drug! Feldman? Why would any state fan listen to that guy?
C34? Who the frick is he? I read a current thread where he goes on a tangent about Mullen wanting out. Wasn't that Feldman? Does that guy even cover MSU? Isn't Feldman an Ole Miss alumni? Then tried to say 2 players told him personally that Dan was gone. From the outside looking in, I think that site is fake. It looks like a rival guy created a board to bash MSU behind the guise of being a fan of MSU.
If anybody wants some great laughs. Go there.

A faction of State fans are looking like serious fools right now. As it turns out, Mullen turned Maryland down, not once, but twice.

I love Mullen as our HC. However, I wouldn't be pissed if he left. I am fairly curious to see if he's built our program up enough to sustain success in the future with another coach. Time will tell.

Really? When did that surface?

I can't believe y'all are biting on this troll
Dude reads sites full of trolls/tards and compares it to the gentlemen's club that is the rant. Long time lurker here and I can say without bias that no one with any sense would accuse the state fan base of being divided or delusional on here. If you have enough balls to cheer for the Dawgs through the Croom years and still wear it proudly than we are far off from delusional or divided.
Oh and ANC, this one's for you

99% of our fanbase wants to keep Mullen as long as possible

this is so accurate it's scary. elite dawgs is my board of choice but I'm definately in the middle category. 1998 arkansas game at the age of 17 will never be forgotten, still have a piece of grass from the field from that day!
