If that is true, then my condolences to her and apology for being crass.

As I said, if true.. then my apology and condolences.
Sometimes things are said in a ribbing or joking manner without knowing the life history of someone and after the fact, you find you shouldn't have said it. I regretfully did so about your friend considering her circumstance. No harm meant to her or her family.
