Actually we borrowed the idea from Yale University. They had Handsome Dan I, an English Bulldog as their first mascot in 1889. Yale is a sister school to Georgia.
Mississippi A & M bought their first dog from Memphis in 1935. Couldn't even find a home grown dog.

I’m no liberal softie, but I’ll echo that UGAs are an over bred abomination with massive health issues. It’s animal cruelty in the way they breed those dogs. UGA can barely breath and they haul that dog onto a hot stadium. Super short life expectancy.
Yale University, which introduced the original “Handsome Dan” bulldog, has recently gone to a more “natural” breed of bulldog for it’s mascot, citing breeding issues.
UGA need to change its mascot. My prediction is that public pressure will force UGA to make a change in the next 5 years. Mark it down.
