What dumb lies you have to tell yourself. There was no public land left in Central Texas by the time the state got around to setting up A&M and Texas. That’s why the lands from which the PUF derives its income are in West Texas, as that was all the state had left (the rest having been sold for decades in order to finance state government).

Now, there is a fun story regarding the founding of Tech. The 1921 legislature had two big public projects to dole out that biennium: the state mental hospital and what would become tech. There was a heated competition which Wichita Falls won. They took the mental hospital.
