So should the NCAA just go ahead and cancel all womens sports?

If you cause women's volleyball to get canceled you will be hunted for sport.

Lady Vols guard and former five-star recruit Jaida Civil has entered the transfer portal, leaving coach Kim Caldwell with ZERO players on the roster.

Civil, one of the top players in the 2025 recruiting class, will enter the portal after just one season on Rocky Top.

Civil, a McDonald’s All-American, posted 6.4 points per game on 41.5% shooting in 30 appearances.

The #LadyVols have lost 13 players since the end of the 2025-26 season due to eligibility or entering the transfer portal.

High school signee Gabby Minus is the only player still tied to the Lady Vols.

Will Kim Caldwell survive the offseason?

women's basketball is, by far, the biggest drain on every AD in the SEC. Looking at several SEC schools profit/loss statements, it's insane how much money womens basketball programs lose every year, and they don't all invest in the sport like South Carolina. There's really no way for them to make money. The ones who win and generate more revenue through ticket sales, etc also spend a ton on coaching staffs. The ones who don't win and generate less revenue spend less on their coaching staffs. It's jus a really expensive sport with operating costs and, without the boost from TV revenue like mens bball and football get, it's just a massive dent to the deficit of the AD

I'm going to assume that the major cost is coaches salaries/NIL... if operating a women's basketball team was that costly... not every friggin D2, D3, NAIA school out there would have a women's basketball team. But they all do.

Women shouldn’t have the opportunity to get athletic scholarships?

And like the OP stated if she was paid nothing they'd still be losing money as is the case with 99.9% of women's sports.

All the coaches salaries combined are peanuts to "capital projects" and soft money waste. Again, "losing money" is a fuzzy term at best. Sailors on leave are more thrifty that spendthrift AD's and athletic departments.

every sport not named football and mens basketball lose money, some a lot some not as much. And no, it's not all from salaries. The operating expenses for teams that have a lot of games and a lot of travel are high. A lot of D2, D3, and NAIA schools lose money in those two major sports as well. Believe it or not, college athletics were not set up as for profit businesses. Colleges have sports for the same reason high schools do.

I'll give you a breakdown of LSU's most recent fiscal year:

Football
Revenue: 112 million; Expenses: 47.5 million; Net: 64.5 million

Mens Basketball
Revenue: 12.8 million; Expenses: 10.3 million; Net: 2.5 million

Womens Basketball
Revenue: 2.6 million; Expenses: 10.5 million; Net: -7.9 million
Lets look at this. Mulkey is paid like 2.5 million. So even if you had a volunteer coach, you're operating at a loss of over 5 million a year because the sport produces no revenue. 1.5 million in travel costs, 1.9 million in "supplies/expenses,"

Track and Field
Revenue: 44k (yes forty-four thousand); Expenses: 6.8 million; Net: -6.8 million

Womens Soccer
Reveue: 15k (yes fifteen thousand); Expenses: 2.5 million; Net: -2.5 million
The entire staff makes around $500k. So even with a volunteer coach, they're operating at a loss of 2 million/year

Gymnastics
Revenue: 900k; Expenses: 3.8 million; Net: -2.9 million

I could go on, but literally every sport but Football, Mens Baksetball, and Baseball (at LSU) loses millions every year. 8 of the varsity sports at LSU have entire staffs and support staffs totaling less than $600k as a unit, so it's not just inflated coaching salaries. That's why football is the lifeblood of every school. It pays for everything else. Sports are expensive to run at a D1 school.
