I continue to watch because I don’t believe it happens all the time. If so, it would get people asking to many questions. I think it is fairly rare. I think most of the bad, incompetent officiating is just that; bad, incompetent officiating. But I do believe games are fixed occasionally. Those are the games that leave people scratching their heads for years. There are verified examples of it happening. And I don’t think human nature has changed. People are still greedy. And with the money increasing it only makes it more likely it is still happening

I didn’t start this thread to bitch, just to see if anyone else thought like I do. So far, I haven’t seen anyone here argue that it doesn’t happen. But no one knows how often or how widespread it is.

Are you saying you believe it doesn’t ever happen?

Too many high definition camera/angels and too many analytical tools to see when a ref goes against their tendencies, especially in big games where there is a lot of money being bet. Throw in some AI that may start analyzing calls and there will be very few ways to hide putting your finger on the scale.

It literally happens every weekend. A referee makes a call on something no one else sees. Not the viewers watching live, not players or coaches, not the announcers, not the cameras and viewers at home. And with so many calls not being reviewable there is no choice but for it to stand.

I am not saying that a bad call is automatically nefarious. But bad calls do happen every week despite the technology we have. Now if someone did want to influence a game, a referee or umpire would likely have a better idea of what they could plausibly get away with than anybody. If you really want some entertainment, go watch some youtube compilations of Angel Hernandez calling balls and strikes. When you type in ‘Angel Hernandez’ youtube will autopopulate ‘Angel Hernandez worst calls’ for you.

There are tons of those videos, here is the first one that popped up for me.

Sorry bro, didn't mean you specifically.

I tend to not think it's a conspiracy. I just think it's incompetence more than anything.

Talking about statistics. When a ref goes off his tendencies in games when there are the most bets.

And Angle Hernandez is just as shitty on a Oakland/Toronto midweek game as he is on for a Yankees/RedSox game that might have postseason implications. There are absolutely no changes in the quality of his calls because they are always bad. Absolutely nobody is saying his calls are good one day and bad the next.

It's happening in pro football, especially since that "commissioner" took over the league.

The only people who don't believe that nefarious activities happen in these games are in a fantasy land. Read the book Interference. Nothing has changed since then.

Even if they aren’t intentionally altering games, there is always a human bias and no SEC ref wants to be the guy that costs Georgia or Alabama a title.
I also notice a “right the wrong” bias where a questionable call that favors one team is often followed by a questionable call that favors the other team in a similar situation.

How would this qualify as a conspiracy theory, and why do so many people have a hard time understanding the meaning of conspiracy theory?

Most fans are suckers who don't want to believe players on their teams, coaches, and/or refs are on the take. But, if you really look at some of the officiating, some of the players' actions and some of the play calling that goes on I feel if you're honest you have to assume that something below board is going on. Not to mention, we have entire pro sports teams that were owned or are still owned by people who have mafia ties.

Well, the Jason Autrey crew that worked the LSU/South Carolina certainly has some tendencies. The tendency to either miss obvious penalties or call very questionable penalties that change the outcome of the game.

The Sordid History of Jason Autrey

quote:

Jason Autrey was the head official of the crew that officiated the 2023 Iron Bowl. While the game will go down in history as one of the greatest iron bowls ever, there was some highly questionable officiating during the contest

quote:

At the time of the contested ball, Alabama was up 49-42 and saw McKinstry intercept the pass to the Vols 20 yard line, only to have it called back for pass interference. This all but would’ve sealed the victory had the controversial call stood. The Vols went on to win the game 52-49. Earlier in this same 2022 contest, Autry was announcing a Tennessee touchdown that was under review indeed standing as called and was seen pumping his fists after announcing the call to the crowd. To Alabama fans, this was a concerning moment, and the forementioned pass interference came a few hours later in that same night.

And then this past weekend the same crew…

Did the Referees Cost South Carolina a Win

quote:

South Carolina got called for offensive pass interference twice on successful passes. There’s only one problem — each time, there was no contact whatsoever.

Even worse, the number called each time was clearly not the correct number.

The first time, backup quarterback Robbie Ashford was called for pass interference, except he was on the bench.

The second was on South Carolina’s first explosive pass of the second half. This was truly one of the worst calls I’ve ever witnessed. Ashford heaved downfield to a blanketed Dalevon Campbell, who made a tremendous catch while being interfered with. Herbstreit commented on the fact that Campbell made the catch despite interference from the defender, which the referees were about to call.

The referees indeed called pass interference, but not on LSU. Instead, South Carolina’s Mazeo Bennett was called for offensive pass interference. Bennett did not touch any defender until the defender engaged him after the pass was caught. Both Herbstreit and Chris Fowler spent the next three minutes trying to find the penalty, wondering aloud if the referees said the wrong number before the cameras watched each receiver individually.

Both Fowler and Herbstreit called the decision that turned a 43-yard gain into a 15-yard penalty “plain wrong.”

The next play, when there was a question about a potential late hit, Herbstreit made his feelings known.

“South Carolina fans are mad they didn’t get a flag there, and after the referees missed that last play, I don’t blame them,” Herbstreit quipped.

Fortunately for South Carolina, that missed call didn’t end the game, and the Gamecocks still had a four-point lead.

What happened next can’t happen in a major college football game.

LSU faced fourth-and-3 at the South Carolina 38. Nussmeier, who was sensational all game, went with a hard count and got South Carolina to jump.

As he took his free play, Nussmeier tried to hit Lacy down the sideline. Lacy stepped out, as called by the referee, who threw his hat, a clear sign that Lacy would be called for illegal touching.

The referees called a very clear incomplete pass a catch on the field. As it went to replay, the illegal touching was never addressed. The referees eventually overturned the call and gave LSU the first down via penalty.

It was another example of the referees just never having a full grasp of the game

Yes indeed, some crews have tendencies. I am not saying it is nefarious. But they called 17 penalties against Alabama and 13 against South Carolina, and missed other obvious penalties, which ultimately decided the outcome of both those games.

Its called confirmation bias. You see the calls that go against your team and ignore the calls that go for your team

There are just too many inexplicably bad calls, or obvious missed calls, that seem to consistently benefit the team with the larger TV market to chalk it up to coincidence.

From “Tales from College Football Sidelines” by Herschel Nissenson, AP national football writer. Condensed version from Kansas St coach Vince Gibbs about 1970 KState Neb game. A friend of his called him from LV to tell him “they got to BJ”. He didn’t believe it but it game two egregious situations went against KSt. After game Big 8 office confirmed to him it had occurred and official had done it for $10,000. Office asked him to not speak since it would hurt the sport.
Seems a bit naive to believe the amounts of money involved now would not encourage malfeasance.

I never said it was a conspiracy, I simply said it wasn’t going well for you. No, the covid vaccine and boosters were not a conspiracy. They happened. We were just lied to about it. It was a fraud. But it is part of some people’s identity and you won’t ever let go of it. I bet you still wear a mask too.

The Jets have some of the worst fan support in the league. And I phrased my statement poorly. I should have said larger TV appeal instead of TV market. There is no doubt when it comes playoff time, the league has match ups they would prefer because they know they will draw higher ratings. Some of this is based on the number of fans the teams have (i.e. the TV market) and some is various story lines. It sure seems their favorite for the last year has been Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. They can’t get enough of it.

Whether they do anything to influence who wins is the question.

But just for the heck of it, ask the Bengals fans here whether they feel the Chiefs got a little help from the refs yesterday.

I like Josh Pate’s take…when Tua went down the other night, all the league offices got calls to call it super tight.

They called things waaaay too tight this past weekend. Never seen anything like it before

Ask any nurse or doctor who was working in an ICU 2021 if they think that first vaccine was a fraud and what percentage of the COVID patients on their unit who were choking to death on their own spit were unvaccinated.

The subsequent boosters and vaccines, not so much.

I do believe that games are intentionally affected by officiating? Ever watch a LSU game officiated by Penn Wagers? That dude hated LSU and went out of his way to screw LSU over. There were others as well, but he was the first that came to mind.
