Nope.
ND needed to have joined the ACC. They could have played essentially the same schedule... dropping Purdue/Arkansas/Boise State and added 3 ACC teams (they already play a ton of them).
They could then have played in and won the ACC championship and they'd get an auto bit and James Madison would have been left out.
ND just needed to be in a conference.
