And be damned to the kids who suffer life altering injuries on the football field. Their life long hospital bills will continue to be their success. Come on? I don't have a problem with providing these players with health care coverage.
I agree with your sentiment BUT the health care issue is fast becoming a moot point. Between the ACA, medicaid, and other health care related laws that are already on the books those life long bills will be paid. It's still a patchwork set of federal, state, and local laws but the patchwork would cover anyone with catastrophic injuries the same as everyone else. It's the small time injuries and health issues that fall through the patchwork and often don't get much coverage and end up costing people so much money. Medications which we still haven't dealt with properly are another big cost.
******Warning******
[Begin healthcare rant] One reason I'm for us going to some form of single-payer completely is that it free employers from the burden of providing insurance, lowers the overall cost of health care, frees employees to move around, encourages entrepreneurship (no worrying about huge premiums if you're not with a big company or if you're your own boss) and lowers the overall economic drag health care has on the economy. It's good for business/employers and it's good for people.
The devil is in the details but if we ever get around to thinking about single-payer like tri-care, medicare, and our congress have then we can work those details out. (Of course this is a pipe dream but the day US companies no longer have to pay health insurance because we have single-payer is the day the price of labor goes down and Americans get more jobs). [/end health care rant]

1) Regional decision. Will certainly be appealed.
2) Court challenge will follow if DC upholds it - and the NLRB has been doing very poorly in court lately.
3) If it survives, athletic scholarships will end at most schools. Hope they enjoy paying for college like everyone else.

Besides, Northwestern President announced he'll drop the football program if they unionize.
Sounds like a Walmart / 1 percenter man. SEC material to be sure.

The Northwestern players are getting some bad advice. If they succeed, their university will have to drop football, and the players will be fricked.
Good. Then Missouri can fulfill it's dream of joining the B1G.

Most schools lose money on college athletics. Just drop NCAA football, allow semi pro leagues to form and colleges can go back to club level, non scholarship football.

Yes and no, just like there are very profitable non profits groups. If you got 1 million this year and next year you got 1.2 million yet you managed to spend it all each year, it just means you are spending more when you should be setting it aside instead. Spend some time in an AD's budget and watch the stupid stuff they over pay for. Needs more scottish bankers in charge of the books and fewer communications majors.

Luckily all the SEC states are right to work - that may help. Plus public institutions except for Vandy.
This wont fly down heah. I would rather go DIII

So what's going to be. Good ol Murican free enterprise (people should be able to sell their skills to the highest bidder), or socialism and regulation (rules not allowing payment).

The better observation would be to disconnect from national mega business and return to local and regional ownership. Money stays where you make it and goes to the most who are on the front line doing the actual work.
Eating at a local restaurant or banking with a community bank are not socialism nor are they unrestricted greed operating under the banner of "free enterprise" to fleece the locals and enrich the out of towners.

20 years ago colleges controlled the markets
Now the conferences do
20 years from now media will own it
As a fan, or player, do you think you will get better treatment from local ownership, or foreign ownership?

Capitalism at work, all college football fans should embrace this.

What about high school players? Should each county in the U.S. provide health insurance down the road for the players? Why just college?
Posted on 3/26/14 at 6:39 pm to Alahunter
I kinda agree with that whole single payer post a couple of pages back

Colleges have the resources to do so, high schools don't.

doesn't matter. High Schoolers are performing the same "job".
