i know WSU is not the place that sells itself, but in that many years, why didn’t he finish consistently at least in the top 20-25?

It’s kinda funny when people throw this out like it’s some sort of positive for coaches. It’s an indictment on them, as a college coach, if they can’t recruit. It’s probably at worst 50% of the job.

It’s like he hasn’t been a coach anywhere else to draw expectations from.

so you're comparing UT to Texas Tech and Washington State?

ok

Tennessee is right to think they should eventually be a contender again.

I keep seeing this, but there is not actually a lot of evidence that it’s true.
Look at how much of a struggle their last coaching search were. Coaches weren’t exactly falling over themselves to get there.

They literally had to hire a coach that got rejected by Mississippi State.
Part of it is just the toxic administration, which won’t change as long as the fat is there.
The other thing is that they have a recruiting disadvantage over the other major contenders.
They can still win the title with the perfect storm just like Florida State, but there’s no path to “former glory” for them.

This has been true for every era after Neyland.

What qualifies as "former glory" to you?

Routine expectations of conference championships.

I think you guys can get to a point where you make noise every few years or so, but I’d compare the ceiling of Tenn more to an Auburn than a Bama.

I love Leach and I'm happy that State was able to pick him up and get him in the conference.

That being said, I worry about his ability to recruit at an elite level. That mixed in with the idea of us not playing strong defense or having a traditional run game was enough to give a lot of people pause.

He wins some games that people don't expect him to, but he loses a lot of games that he has no business losing as well. I think he's a better fit at schools like Texas Tech, WSU & Miss St that need a unique edge over some of the larger schools with more resources.

The jury is still out, but I think most UT fans have been happy about the Pruitt hire.

oh yeah. UT compares much better to UGA, UF, LSU, and Auburn than to Alabama.

It's nearly unbelievable how bad they have been the last 20 years compared to the rest of their history. As a good Alabama fan I have kind of enjoyed it but it's foolish to think it will last.

Quick fixes typically have a lower ceiling than a steady builder. Short term Leach is a good option. Long term, Pruitt will have better overall results.

Naw. Pruitt won’t win the East or beat Bama. Leach would most certainly have done both in Knoxville.

Maybe, I think Leach would have been given a quick hook for not sucking the boosters' cock there. That's pretty much his biggest issue.

I think Mississippi State works great for him. For some reason they consider a coach who went like 2-20 or something in ranked games to be a good coach there. So Leach should do really well there.

Leach won a title with Stoops at OU.

No he didn't. Mark Mangino was the OC that year.

Leach was at OU just one season, 1999. They went 7-5 that year.

Yes, and he is the weapon that will riddle SEC defenses for the rest of the year.
