In the wake of the Mullen firing I was looking through some old threads back when it was rumored he was going elsewhere, and in this thread there was speculation about him going to aTm although other schools were mentioned as well. LINK

Here’s what I had to say on the matter.

I agree with this. He seems to like where he is and over time a coach like that becomes invested in the school and the school/fans become invested in him. In some ways it becomes difficult to uproot and move on absent some compelling reason to do so. It really becomes more about the quality of life which takes into account family and a lot of other things. It's not about the most money, some "destination" job where everybody notices you and thinks you are cool and gives you a better chance of winning a title. Getting into a pressure cooker often comes with such gigs, and that's not for everybody. If a person, in the coaching profession or otherwise, is able to live comfortably and be happy with where they are along with their family, then that often is what is most important in life, recognizing that people are different. Some very successful coaches have made a good living at smaller places and have retired after coaching many seasons at such places. It's not always about moving on to what some perceive as "bigger and better" things.

Lots of folks had differing opinions on the matter back at that time. I do not think there was any doubt he could have stayed at MSU until retirement. Now, after being fired after four seasons at Florida, it comes down to whether the change, both financially, and personally, was a good one.

What say the Ranters?

He regrets going to Florida. Not leaving Starkville. He was itchin' to leave all the time.

His best fit is probably O coordinator at a major program, but he'll go to HC at a lower tier and try again to work up.

He has $12M reasons for no regrets.
Florida was also paying him more than Kirby (because Mullen's agent kept testing the nfl waters).

The real question is if florida regrets dan mullen leaving MSU?

I think he wanted an NFL job in the future after last season but that is out the door now unless Meyer came calling. I think he doesn't care for recruiting too much. Curious to see what he ends up doing now. Some former player claims he was shopping his resume a little before being fired.

If he hadn't left State for Florida, he'd be getting fired from Tennessee right now. He was gone regardless....it was time for him to go.

Florida gave him, what, 36 million dollars? At State, he might would have earned 20.

You can call me a failure for 16 million. It's better than $5 for me right now.

Dude has FU money now, what does he care? The UF contract gave him true financial security. Now it's just about feeling fulfilled coaching in the ideal spot for him. If that doesn't work out he can always use $100 bills to burn and keep warm at night.

This. Not sure why anybody feels any empathy for these guys when their prick agent is pulling them money like this for failure.

Nah. UF is the pinnacle (or as close as you get to the top) as a college coach. Mullen is still young and still has another major coaching gig in him. Still a good experience and he made a frick ton of money
