Furthermore, teams that won the first game AWAY won the rematch 79.9% of the time.

Data retrieved from sports-reference.com

I wrote an AWK program and parsed the data.

1869-2010
Beat Opponent Again: 373 (77.547%)
Got Beat 2nd time: 108 (22.453%)
Won AT opponent 1st game and won rematch 123 (79.870%)
Won AT opponent 1st game but lost rematch 31 (20.130%)

So please stop with the "Hard to beat a team twice" crap.

Edit: Fixed error

That's very interesting. Logic would dictate the first loser would have the upper hand the second time, because they can planinly see why they lost, what didn't work, and how to correct it, while the winning team's gameplan obviously worked so they might not change things up much.

But the data clearly disproves that.

how many of these games were rematches in the same season? I don't there's been 154 in the same season.

Every last one of these was a rematch game in the same season. Dates back to 1869 when colleges first started playing each other in football--481 rematches. There were a lot of rematches from 1869 up through the 1930s then they slacked off severely. 1869-1939 had 380 rematches and there were 52 in the 1940s. But from 1950-2010 there were only 49 rematches.

Interestingly, LSU has been involved in three of them in the past 15 years, more than any other school.

Rd. 1

vs. Notre Dame Lost 26-8
@ Tennessee Lost 26-18
vs. Georgia Won 17-10

Rd. 2

vs. Notre Dame Won
vs. Tennessee Won 31-20
vs. Georgia Won 34-13

This is a "double secret revenge" game.

Guaranteed Bama championship.

Parse out all of the games that were not tied at the end of regulation and run the percentages again.
