Woodson was fortunate to have a few great moments at the end of the season in the big game #1 vs #4. A punt return, a key int, shut down David Boston, pass break-ups, played wideout with a key reception, and taunted the OSU bench. He literally took over the game on both sides. Think of Honey Badger season then did that against Alabama.
Peyton suffered from the usual finish of having to play the likes of unspectacular losing record teams for 2 months. All his resume was the the SECCG. He had one game to win all year and he lost it.

Honestly if it went to the person who had the best year, it should have gone to Ryan Leaf. He took Washington State to the Rose Bowl.
Woodson won purely because of media hype.

And they only did that for the Heisman Hype

NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year (1998)

NFL 2000s All-Decade Team
Compare to Manning:
2 x Super Bowl Champion (1 more than Woodson)
Super Bowl MVP (vs 0 for Woodson)
14 x Prow Bowl (5 more than Woodson)
7 X First Team Pro Bowl (3 more than Woodson)
3 x Second Team All Pro (1 less than Woodson)
5 x NFL MVP (vs 0 for Woodson)
2 x NFL Offensive Player of the Year (1 more than Woodson on D)
3 x NFL Passing Yards Leader
4 x NFL passing touchdowns leader
3 x NFL Passer rating leader
NFL 2000s All Decade Team (same as Woodson)
4 NFL Records:
- Career regulare season passing touchdowns (539)
- Passing touchdowns in a season (55)
- Passing yards in a season (5,477)
- Passing touchdowns in a game (7)
Woodson was 2nd team All Pro 1 more time than Manning...so there's that.

UT has been the victim of the two most bullshite Heisman votes ever. That one, and Johnny Majors losing to Paul hornung, who played for a 2-9 (two and fricking nine) ND team.

Another tidbit, both Woodson and Manning entered the league and retired from them the same year. Woodson got the Heisman from Manning as well all know their senior years, then both their final years in the NFL Woodson picked off Manning twice in a game after having never picked him off their entire careers up to that point.

1997 stats
Woodson
7 ints, returned for 7 yards
25 punt return yards a game, 1 punt return td
21 rec yards a game, 1 total rec TD
Manning
318 yards/game--36 tds--11 ints--144 rating
Woodson winning was an absolute Big 10 media bias scam

Nope. The guy who got screwed in 56 instead of Majors was Jim Brown.

Yes. Peyton got screwed.

Peyton: benched for poor play in final game
Woodson: not benched

When Peyton lost.... That was the day the Heisman lost a lot of its luster to me. I honestly quit paying attention to it until this year.

Peytons last game before the Heisman was a SEC championship MVP performance
373 yards-4 tds-2 ints
Down two scored in the 4th qtr, peyton then threw a 41 yard and 73 yard td pass to have a comeback victory
You are such a clown

Champ was a legit two way player. He played about 25-30% of the offensive snaps.
Woodson caught like 10 passes in the last month of the season and all of the sudden he was a “two way player”.
But I will admit Woodson turned out to be a legit NFL stud. I can’t argue with his nfl career.
So did Champ Bailey...imagine if he had gotten the hype that Woodson got.
Comparing their numbers, Bailey was hurt by the run happy offenses, and strong rush defenses of the SEC:
Interceptions - Bailey 8, Woodson 16
Interception yards - Bailey 67, Woodson 81
Interception TDs - Bailey 1, Woodson 0
Receptions - Bailey 59, Woodson 21
Receiving Yards - Bailey 978, Woodson 370
YP Catch - Bailey 16.6, Woodson 17.6
Receiving TDs - Bailey 5, Woodson 3
Carries - Bailey 21, Woodson 9
Rushing yards - Bailey 99, Woodson 167
Rushing TDs - Bailey 0, Woodson 2
YP Carry - Bailey 4.7, Woodson 18.6
Total Yards from Scirmmage - Bailey 1,077, Woodson 537
Total TDs from scrimmage - Bailey 5, Woodson 5
Kick returns - Bailey 23, Woodson 4
Kick return yards - Bailey 511, Woodson 82
Kick return TDs - Bailey 0, Woodson 0
Kick yards per return - Bailey 22.2, Woodson 20.5
Punt returns - Bailey 4, Woodson 40
Punt return yards - Bailey 49, Woodson 321
Punt return TDs - Bailey 0, Woodson 1
Yards per punt return - Bailey 12.3, Woodson 8.0
Woodson had twice as many interceptions, but only 14 more yards and one less td as a result of them.
Bailey had more receptions and receiving yards.
Woodson had more rushing yards on less carries.
They had the same number of tds from scrimmage.
Bailey had a lot more kickoff return yards.
Neither had a kickoff return td.
Woodson had a lot more punt return yards.
Woodson had 1 punt return td.
So...Woodson had more ints. Bailey accounted for more offensive yards...they accounted for the same number of TDs.
Woodson won the Heisman trophy in '97. Bailey finished 7th in '98.
