You sound touchy.

Simply responding to a prompt as to why the PD was involved. They stole things (knowingly or not). Then, charges were dropped and they were released.

As far as the BB stuff, I have never been in support of the decision of Oats. Nor, do I or any of us have any say in such a decision. So, I'm confused about the implication in your post. "Ya'll" didn't do anything.

Glad charges were dropped in this case. But, it doesn't mean they weren't leaving without paying for items and a police investigation wasn't warranted.

Beep or no beep. We have all scanned items at self-checkout. It is plausible it was an honest mistake, like forgetting the case of cokes you had under the cart, but it doesn't seem likely, and it doesn't change the fact they were attempting to leave the store with items that weren't paid for.

Yet, again, fraud/theft prevention caught it with no loss to the store. Would much prefer the outcome that occurred with dropped charges and possibly a lesson learned for 2 young men with promise and no known history of other transgressions

That isn’t what happened.

Multiple people reported the players offered to pay for the items that didn’t scan and the Walmart manager refused to let them. Apparently, even ACCPD (well known for targeting UGA students regardless of their athletic standing) allegedly encouraged the Walmart manager not to press charges either.

I am getting it from this story.

LINK

quote:

On Monday, The Athletic obtained the police report.

Glover and Walker were charged after they allegedly attempted to leave a Walmart without paying for a combined 13 items that totaled $94, according to an incident report provided by Athens-Clarke County police. The players told police they did not realize a store scanner had not picked up the items.

Glover and Walker were stopped by a Walmart staff member when they were leaving. They initially declined to go into the store’s loss prevention office before a police officer arrived, handcuffed them and took them into the office.

During an interview in the office, per the report, the players told the police officer “they had not intended to steal the merchandise and that they must have lost track of what items had been scanned between the two.”

The report does not state how many items the players paid for when checking out. It does mention a debit card was used to pay for some other items.

The decision was up to the store on whether to press charges, and the loss prevention team did so, in addition to informing Walker and Glover they were barred from that Walmart for two years.

I am not wanting to string them up, as they are stupid arse college kids, and I did worse when I was in college. But they knew what they were doing.

Exactly what lesson did these young men learn if they didn’t steal? That Walmart customers should be very very careful? That the APD will let a store manager decide whether or not a crime has been committed? That the AJC will put your name front and center over something that wasn’t proved because you are a UGA player?
Maybe they learned that there are a lot of hot shot savage lawyers who would love to represent them. I’m hoping so

wonder how many speeding charges leveled at athletes from various programs were due to faulty radars.

Wonder when Texas is ever gonna beat UGA

I mean, ensuring your items ring up at self-checkout is probably a good start.

Y’all should know Gator. I’m sure Cam Newton knew exactly what he was doing when he threw that laptop out of the window, too.
This story sounds like an AJC hit job. Guess the Athletic needs to jack up its readership. It might have been a good idea to wait for the real story to come out before they started competing with the AJC.

Good to see these falsely accused young men not slip between the cracks of the legal system.

That would be hard to do with the APD. They make arrests for making right hand turns from the left hand lane, and riding a scooter without a helmet if you are an UGA athlete. And the AJC is there to put it all in huge print on the front page.

So they still didn’t pay for the items and left?

Not stealing.

Got it.

Walmart doesn’t usually go hard in the paint unless they have an iron clad case. So frick that Athens Walmart and its manager and frick Athens PD for not clearing it up at the store. I hope they sue the shite out of WM.

In their defense, I imagine they really do need the Febreze.

I’m sure they were looking to score some big ticket black market items:

I loved the part where a lot of what was listed as stolen was Walmart brand items. If they really were intent on stealing, they would have gotten the good stuff. Walmart brand paper towels, plates, sugar, bread?

I'm not sure why "Walmart tried to refund some of the recovered merchandise to an EBT card that was used to pay for some of the items, but was unable to do so." Does that mean Walmart stole from them?

Walmart really doesn't have a good reputation in terms of policing self checkout. Even way back when I was 22, I remember them scrutinizing me briefly for trying on a belt and putting it back on the rack.

If they weren't out of the store yet, I wouldn't even say it's theft yet even if they intended to steal anything.
