Doesn’t look like confirmation of dropped charges have made it to mainstream media but word is that’s where this is going among people far more connected than me. I believe Rusty (IIRC) has already commented that neither player would be missing any time.
As for details of the incident, Marc Weiszer has those:

The story was broken by Marc Weiscer (sp?) at the Athens Banner-Herald who has been on the UGA beat for decades and is a known player hater. The only stories he ever breaks are arrests. His full time job is the UGA sports beat, never has any sort of breaking news on recruits, injury status, coaching changes, etc. Only arrests. It's a pattern that goes back a long way. When I first saw this story break and saw Marc in the byline I immediately knew it was a nothing-burger.

So since you didn’t answer the question I’ll help. Why did they walk out with stolen merchandise
Posted on 12/15/25 at 2:24 pm to Csmims
I make sure each item is scanned because I’m not a thief.

So no one has a problem with them being stopped at the door and asked to go pay for the stuff they didn't scan and they refused?
Then the popo got there. Now Walmart pressed charges.
Another black eye for Kirby. They ended up paying for the stuff and the charges were dropped, but they didn't need to be jerks about it.
It is not a good look for Georgia, but this is what happens when your program wins big.
Nick Saban is the only coach ever to keep a lid on a program that spends a decent amount of time at the top of college football. He was relentless when it came to staying in front of his team about this stupid arse shite and avoiding the negative spotlight.

Yeah, it’s a pattern that Georgia players frequently get arrested.

So much to unpack in this quote from the ABH-
quote:
Walmart tried to refund some of the recovered merchandise to an EBT card that was used to pay for some of the items, but was unable to do so.

wont happen here because of the high profile of the individuals (should though) but this is why retailers do not aggressively pursue shop lifting
Walmart typically does

it all too often is the result of a dumb arse jumping to conclusions and a settlement for the wrongfully accused far more expensive than the items in question.
I can’t even begin to tell you how false this is. No it’s typically people shoplifting and getting caught shoplifting
quote:
The pricing includes loss, it’s a fools game to risk litigation over something that is already accounted for.
It’s really not. Walmart loses billions a year in shoplifting losses. They can afford the legal bills and it’s definitely worth it for them. I used to take criminal appointments when I started my career. Walmart prosecuted literally everything no matter how petty. So did Target.

How did the ACC PD get involved? The people from that organization who were involved in arresting these 2 should be fired and banned from ever serving in a similar capacity anywhere in the US....including a prosecutor and PD office employees. This could easily have cost these 2 young men millions depending on the draft stock....and it could cost someoone without 2 nickels to run together to lose their job and their homes and all manner of ill shite....
Oh please

Lots of folks are angry in this thread that some college kids aren’t getting burned at the stake because they didn’t scan some napkins and febreeze.
I’m sure this will get just as much traction as the original story…

If these high-income college football players were charging an EBT card, this opens up welfare fraud and unreported income issues.

Video surveillance shows them scanning items and the scanner didn’t work properly.
Mmhhhmmm. I know when I’m scanning stuff I make sure it beeps for each item. Easy way to prevent arrest

I guess we are to believe 2 college students were too stupid to realize the items didn't scan
Is that really that unbelievable?

It’s not the first time these type of scanners have malfunctioned. If you don’t listen closely it could happen to you too.
It wasn’t at Walmart, but at a grocery store where I was using one of these things years ago when after successfully scanning several things the dang thing stopped pinging on some items.
I was lucky that I realized this and had a staff member check it out. She said it wasn’t the first time that machine had had problems and moved me to a regular checkout. Since then I don’t use these check outs. It hasn’t been from fear of what happened at Walmart but more for the inconvenience they can cause when things won’t ring up. Now I’d worry about being drug off to jail if I didn’t catch a problem

That isn’t what happened.
Multiple people reported the players offered to pay for the items that didn’t scan and the Walmart manager refused to let them. Apparently, even ACCPD (well known for targeting UGA students regardless of their athletic standing) allegedly encouraged the Walmart manager not to press charges either.

It's going to bring down the whole UGA Athletic Program.

Because they stole items
Charges may have been dropped, but they took multiple items they didn't pay for.
If only there was a little audible beep when the product scans... oh wait.

No one wants them burned at the stake dude. A stay away order, fine, and community service would be a perfectly reasonable outcome for what they did.
