I agree with the page function. To get to specific pages in a thread (if it's multiple pages) you have to either hit the arrow several times or go to the url and cut/paste the page you want, then hit enter. There should be a function to specify the desired page in the thread you would like to view.

There is a "Jump to page" box on mobile.

I like the lack of auto-quote when replying. If every reply is autoquoted then it takes forever to scroll through the page. With it being a multi-step process, there generally has to be a good reason for the person to be quoting it or they wouldn't go through the hassle.

I think essentially what we're all saying is that the current layout serves as a great filter for keeping out unwanted content from low-energy posters.

I mean, imagine if it was worse than it already is.

Why not just a neutral reply button? Why does it always have to be associated with someone else's reply?

And if you want new people to join in this merry band of renegades why not remove the red downvote. How negative is that when a lot of people wonder if they really have enough to say? It may give the kids in the room something to keep them busy, but the point is to encourage comments.

Responding to the OP is considered a neutral reply to the thread, isn't it?

It’s funny when I’m the last post in a thread and someone who is actually on my side replies to my post that he wants to fight me when he really meant it for the OP. The most neutral reply would be to the OP, but as my example illustrates, people don’t really pay attention enough to follow that protocol.

Is it?

It is IMO. Or you can always reply to the last post and say "this is just a general reply to the topic and not anyone particularly."

Yes...that is the reason for so much bullshite on Facebook and Twitter...because it is easy. Tigerdroppings is just easy enough.

I tend to look through the results and hit the nearest reply button. I suppose, based on replies to my specific post a lot of posters do the same. They quote me but obviously are commenting about something else.

Also, when I want to reply to a particular poster I try to quote some part of their comment. It doesn't get much easier than that. I wish other posters commenting back with me would do the same. That takes all the guesswork out of that.

Yeah that part is obvious. I'm not sure if know this or not, but if you click on the username of the person being replied to, it will take you back to the post that was replied to as well. That helps a lot.

We don't see it as much here (most reply back to OP), but that's common on longer threads like the hurricane posts on the OT, where it's assumed that replies are just general in nature, and not directed to the last poster.

In other words, if you're in a 46-page thread, you might get replies that aren't meant just for you, especially if someone is typing a long post on a thread that is moving quickly.

I also agree about quoting the relevant portion of what you're actually replying to, which makes this issue moot (assuming people would actually do it).
