If I never stepped foot Atlanta again it would be too soon. Bland, humid, crowded with little soul. Just strip mall America suburbia. Boring.

You've never been in this type of negotiation. Have you?

Downtown Atlanta has nothing compared to New York bro
No shite…. In the same way New York is a sleepy village compared to London, Mexico City, Paris, Berlin , Tokyo…..New York is nearly 3 times bigger than Atlanta. It is the economic and banking engine of the world….only a fool would compare NY to Atlanta in terms of importance the same way a fool would compare Nashville to Atlanta.

Turner Field was FAR from "downtown Atlanta".

Of course those two programs like the game there, it’s basically neutral ground for them.

Wasn’t it by the zoo just a short walk from downtown Atlanta? I seem to remember it was right around the I20/I85 disaster.

Braves moved to Smyrna because the majority of braves fans are the same demographic as the SEC fans who are uncomfortable in downtown Atlanta. They are middle aged middle income white people whose idea of exotic location is Gatlinburg and Orange Beach. They, like so many other similarly situated individuals are scared to death to stray off the path from the WCC Station and Mercedes Benz Stadium because they mistakenly believe the area is crime ridden and dangerous when in fact it is no where near as dangerous as their suburb or rural community, for visitors, and every crime statistic supports that….you are far less likely to be a victim of a crime, especially a violent crime, in downtown Atlanta during a major event than you would be in the rural or suburban south on a typical Tuesday night. Atlanta hosts around 60 million visitors a year, about 40 million spend at least one night, the number of those visitors who were victimized by crime who were not themselves involved in criminal activity is statistically insignificant…..it is not dangerous to visit Atlanta but you can’t convince folks who suffer from irrational fears….

The point should be to locate the SECCG in a more central location or at least rotate it geographically. ATL is not a central location for our 16 teams.
& should we add (or remove) teams, we'll have to relocate things again to be more central to that geography?

Turner Field and Fulton County Stadium were a LONG walk from downtown…..most people who used MARTA took shuttles to games. Summerhill is adjacent, more or less, to grant park but it’d be a good hike from the stadium to the zoo.
For those that ain’t been getting to Braves games is harder now than it was before the move unless you have paid a PILE for parking. The Battery is great but on game day getting from your car to the stadium is a MISERABLE experience or a very expensive one

Current crime map in Atlanta.
There was no “because they mistakenly believe the area is crime ridden and dangerous”. It’s a shithole on par with many 3rd world countries. In fact if it was outside the US, the State Department would have a travel advisory for it. It would see a level 2 advisory as the norm with level 3 warnings fairly common. The CIA guidance would include avoid downtown, avoid groups of locals, with monitor for deteriorating conditions. But to be fair the number of US urban areas with a population around 1/2 a million or more and a liberal governing body that wouldn’t rate a heightened risk factor is likely very, very low.
Inside 285 has a wonderful flavor about it but it’s best done in highly structured, preferable daylight settings.

Even though your name just joined this site 1 week ago, I lived just outside New Haven, CT for over 7 years & went to NY, maybe, 3X that entire time.
Well, maybe more if you count being there only for an airport.

You are describing the suburbs of Atlanta….yes, they are as generic as any suburb anywhere in the US. The SECCG is downtown….. there is no more vibrant area with as much to see and do anywhere in the south except for possibly Miami. Again, if you suffer from irrational fears and think the downtown area is dangerous, especially during a major event, your unhappiness with Atlanta is on you, it ain’t on Atlanta. There is a reason Atlanta is as popular a destination for visitors as any city in the nation….it’s because most folks ain’t scared of their own shadow and are all over Atlanta doing things that make scared middle aged white folks and their offspring uncomfortable….like walking through a neighborhood where the residents aren’t just like them.
