Our 2008 Tornado Tourney Run was awesome. But I’d think regular season means more.

Simple answer: which team gets the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament?

And you can add Exhibit A: Which means more...finishing the regular season ranked #1 in the AP poll, or winning the NCAA Tournament?

I would say Regular Season is a more difficult accomplishment, a team has to keep winning all year. However the tournament is fun because teams can come out of nowhere and win it like Ms. State did in 2009.

They do but every SEC regular season champ gets an at-large bid. Like I said, conference tournaments only matter more for one-bid conferences

Has the SEC ever been crappy enough in a sport where the regular season champion didn't receive an NCAA playoff at-large?

Back in the 80's for just a few years, SEC Baseball combined the regular season with the tournament. I believe the team with the best record after both was crowned SEC Champion. That's interesting, although it could cost a good SEC team in the NCAA's because they couldn't hold back pitchers and still win the SEC.

The Tournament Champ gets the automatic bid, so that makes it more prestigious.

Regular season only determines tourney seeds, tournament only determines trip to national tournament. Therefore:

Regular Season < Conference Tournament < National Tournament

regular season has the more complete body of work that represents it and a bigger sample size means a better chance that it is truly the most deserving champion

the single elimination tournaments, even when seeded properly, can have a bad team go on a hot streak and win so they aren't the best at selecting the best team

however the SECT is still an accomplishment worth mentioning, it just isn't as impressive to me as a regular season title

Before the Tournament was extended you had to win your conference tourney to be in.

Not sure about the SEC , but there was a year where we went 14-0 in the ACC regular season and lost the conference tourney title game to NC State.

We finished the season 24-3 (14-0) and were left out of the tournament.

And it's not entirely the "conference champ" but a few years ago we won a share of the East when it was still split into divisions and we did not make the Tourney
Darrin Horn's first year.

Winning the regular season is more of a complete body of work and the better way to determine the best team. However, you also have to consider that only one gets you an automatic bid into the tournament. Obviously if you win the SEC regular season then you're going to be in the tournament, but I bet if you asked any mid or low major teams which they'd rather win they'd all say the conference tournament.
