I've always considered a regular season championship to be better than a tournament championship, but apparently there are some who consider the tournament better.

Is it ok for a tournament champion to claim an "SEC Championship" or does the word 'Tournament' HAVE to be in there?

Obviously for football winning the SECCG is better than finishing with the best regular season record, so that's a 'tournament is better' scenario.

Is it different for different sports, like basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, track, etc.? Is the tourney more important in some but not others?

One on twitter has said that UK lists their conference championships in basketball and all are tournament championships. That surprised me (and are they correct?).

We know now that top baseball teams will actually hold back or rest their best pitchers/players for the SEC baseball tourney, so for baseball the regular season should be the most important.

What about tennis? Is a regular season finish more important than the SEC tourney at the end of the season?

I don't follow track very closely but I guess we don't even have dual meets in track to keep standings of "wins and losses". Seems every week is a different group meet (tournament) of some sort and the conference championship all comes down to a meet at the end.

It's easier to win the tournament

Yes teams that win the SECT that didn’t win the regular season title. The regular season title has always been a better and more important accomplishment in this conference. Conference tourney titles are only more important in one bid conferences. The trophy you get for winning the tournament doesn’t say SEC Champions but rather SECT Champions. Same goes for baseball

To me it’s regualr season
But it makes it shitty that for all other non power conferences the regualr season is basically just there for seeding

It's more fun to win the Tournament and more people know/see you winning it.

It's a bigger accomplishment to win the regular season. But it doesn't really matter since most people don't watch regular season basketball.

Tourney champ gets automatic bid I think.

They do but every SEC regular season champ gets an at-large bid. Like I said, conference tournaments only matter more for one-bid conferences

Regular season champs always trumps tourney champs in baseball and basketball. Much harder to win regular season in both of those compared to the tournaments.

I have never seen Tennessee win the SEC tourney. I know the regular season is more important but I have seen Tennessee win a couple of those. I would rather win the tourney.

Regular season is harder to do. Some teams just get hot in the tourney

That is just what I personally would rather see.

Unless you're in the ACC, the "regular season" champ is the conference champ.

Both are good but I think the regular season is a tad harder because you have to have more consistency. Tourney play can often be a matter of getting hot at the right time.

For me it's Regular Season Champs > Tournament Champs. It just means more to be able to do it over the course of a season. The conf tourney is a lot of fun though because anything can happen and there's so much emotion packed inside that week with the single elimination format and all of the possible match ups.

We will receive a trophy Friday just before Noon CDT and it will say 2019 SEC Champions. It will not say regular season anywhere on it. Whoever wins the SEC Ty will receive a trophy that says SEC Tournament Champions.

When you say lists, lists them where? I’m not sure I know the answer. Personally I prefer the regular season championship by far.
