He would have won somewhere like Alabama. MSU is not a good measuring stick for a head coach because it is a flop of a program.

Torbush?
But, Mullen did correct that one very quickly.

No interviews with Pegues or Dixon...man I feel like both those guys were with Croom at MSU for 16 years.

Truth be told, I don't know enough (anything) about his hires to comment.
But give him time. If he hasn't already done so, his personnel bed will, at some point, be the resting place for a piece of shite coach. ;)

I wish he would have beaten Alabama one more time to make three so he could claim a victory for each time they rejected him.

Like I said earlier, he was about to be named Alabama's head coach, then Jesse Jackson ran his mouth.
Jackson is the sole reason Bama didn't hire him.

True story.

His initial impression of the interview with Alabama was that it was fair and was so positive that he considered himself to be the lead candidate afterwards, which was why he was so surprised when the offer was given to Shula, a coach with over ten fewer years of coaching experience. Afterwards the Rev. Jesse Jackson got involved, calling for an investigation into the hiring practices at Alabama and all SEC schools.
You sure?

No, he wouldn't have. People act like he had "no choice" but to kick off THIRTY FIVE scholarship players when he got here. Really? Jackie left him with a bunch of talent, which he subsequently kicked off the team and set himself back many years. I'm not doubting that they were thugs, but a truly excellent coach would have gotten those players to "buy in" rather than running them off en masse. Look at Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss for reference of how to accomplish this(he walked into a VERY similar situation). I can also just imagine how the "well you will never win here, but you can build a foundation" line went in recruiting. Houston Nutt no doubt appreciates it. Jackie left Croom with the Scout/Rivals #17/17 and #20/#9 in 2002 and 2003.
He could have been a success as a head coach if he would have been a little less proud and a little more flexible in his ways. The failure to fire Woody McCorvey as OC is what actually cost him his job in the end.
Scoring offense:
2004 - 114(t) of 117
2005 - 113 of 117
2006 - 97 of 119
2007 - 96 of 119
2008 - 115 of 119
The stadium was expanded to current capacity in 2002. Croom sold it out once, the Alabama game in 2007. Dan Mullen did not sell it out for his first 4 games, but has sold out every single one since. That is 19 straight sellouts for those counting at home. Fundraising in our athletics department quadrupled basically overnight from Croom to Mullen.
No doubt Croom was a great man and a good representative for our university and a good reflection for who Mississippi State has always been. We integrated peacefully, broke the "law" and snuck out of state in the middle of the night to compete against all black Loyola in the NCAA tourney the same year the race riots happened at Ole Miss, etc...He was just never an SEC head coach.
I have still never gotten over the fact that Jimbo Fisher campaigned MIGHTILY for the job at the time and Gary Patterson also wanted it badly. Patterson was never even granted an interview. Common sense says that MSU would have been much, much better off with either. Could you imagine how good a fit Patterson would have been at MSU, which is a very similar situation to TCU(few blue chip recruits, relies on development, plays defense-first football, etc), nevermind his loyalty for getting the chance at TCU has been unwavering. Would have been the same at MSU most likely...

Find me a coach who hasn't shite the bed with a hire.
Mullen shat the bed with Torbush as his first year DC, but he corrected it after that one year as well(with Manny Diaz).
I also saw Mirando as a huge mistake promotion, which it clearly was. Especially when you replace him with someone like Brewster.
One thing about Mullen is he goes outside his "bubble" in practically ever hire. He goes after the best and brightest nationally, even pulling guys with obvious loyalties to other programs(Wilson to OU and Collins to Bama to name a few). Been by FAR the best MSU coach ever on hiring assistants.

I'm not going to ever watch this because I'm not a sadist.
I lived it once. I don't need to relive it.

Sylvester Croom was a great role model for people if you want your role model to constantly blame others for your failures, complain about everything, be stubborn as shite, be comically lazy, and accept mediocrity.

Manny Diaz was such a piece of shite coach. I can't believe Texas doubled his salary to take over Boom's fricked up defense.
