A 95 was the lowest "A" in Louisiana until probably 2004-2005 or so. Then it dropped to 93 IIRC

That's around the time they changed it in SC. In '01 it changed to a 93-100 for an A.

Does anyone see this as a "Dumbing Down of America" issue?

In Louisiana it used to be 95-100 A, 87-94 B, 75-86 C

Texas uses a 10 pt. Louisiana does something like 7 pt now.

Huh. The 10 point grading scale was how my HS did it. I just assumed that was the norm.

I was on the 4/5 point system, everything above 4 was only for AP courses

I think Kentucky is one of the mixed states. Lexington still does that 7 pt scale, but Jefferson County Public Schools switched over to the 10 pt scale.

Sure it's a lowering of the traditional standards, but it's at least taking them to a collegiate grading scale (I assume 99+% of colleges use the 10 point scale).

I'm so confused by the posts in this thread.

My ENTIRE time in public school...

90-100 was an A
80-89 was a B
70-79 was a C
0-69 was a F

Various teachers would add + or - however they saw fit on certain assignments but ultimately you received a simple letter grade.

Some of us, from other states, had different grading scales. SC used a 7 point scale for the past 15 years. You probably grew up in TX, and y'all had the same 10 point scale in HS, MS and Elem that y'all did in college. For states that didn't have the same 10 point scale, it was harder for kids form those 7 or 5 point states to qualify with the NCAA for GPA requirements.

I remember an A being 95-100 until my junior year in a MS public school.

In MS public HS you get a B for just coming to class and keeping your mouth shut. Put forth any effort at all and you get an A.

Well I went to school in Lexington so that would make sense. Jefferson County could obviously use the 10 pt scale more than us due to their much larger "urban" areas.

Dumb states have 10 point scales. Fact.

Like GA? A 90 in GA is an A, and an 80 is a B in Cobb County.

But then a 74 is a C and a 70 is a D. Anything under is an F.

Jefferson County recently switched to a 10 in order to align with other counties in Kentucky who have been doing it.

I thought it was up to the school? In Baton Rouge the high school I went to had 10pt. One of my buddies went to a different high school in BR had a 7pt scale. Another buddy at a different school had 6pt.

*I don't know if this has anything to do with it but all 3 are private schools.

I believe it's up to the district in most states. Individual schools in private. I know ours changed to help students who were losing out on scholarship opportunities due to students in other states already on a 10 pt scale getting the advantage of a higher GPA as a result of the scale (a lot of scholarships don't differentiate the difference in scales).
