Man, I remember when Carl West ran that TD in ... his number was 39 and Rogers was 38 and it fooled everyone.

West was another helluva back in his own right. He had a great season in '81.

Anyone notice Ray Goff on the SC sideline as an Asst. Coach?

Likewise. I wished they showed more of these. I love seen games of historical games that I was either too young or not born yet to have seen. They showed the '84 game between us and Clemson on ESPNU last year and it was awesome.

I also love seeing what the stadium used to look like. For UGA they hadn't added that Tech Deck yet and with the smaller scoreboard you can see people on that bridge on campus back there.

Oh yeah. Ray left at the end of that year as an assistant for Carlen at SCAR and joined Dooley at UGA if I remember correctly.

ETA: Matter of fact, I think three or four assitants on SCAR's staff that year ended-up being head coaches.

Goff and Dantonio I know for sure.

That was the play where Rogers broke his hand. We were lucky to recover that ball.

They may. It hasn't even been airing a week yet.

#47 Willie Scott was a 1st round draft pick and future all pro TE for SCAR that same year as Rogers (who was the #1 pick) and I don't think we got the ball to Scotty but one time in that game. Gary was just not on throwing the ball that day.

But he was 2-1 vs UGA, this was his only loss to UGA if I remember correctly. This one on the road.

Two weeks earlier we had mudholed Michigan at the Big House. I think Rogers had 170 yards in that game.

Keith Jackson just jinxed us with the turnover remark ... and the scoreboard reads, "make'em fumble dawgs!"

Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.

Here we are driving for the win and Rogers with a broken hand ... the trainer is talking to him.

Carlen shouldn't have done it.

Those things were damn hard to come by. You damn near had to kill someone to get one of those.

ETA: Notice we didn't have names on the back of the jerseys like most teams back then either.

Jim Carlen was a great coach. I loved that guy. He was a man's man. I saw Vince Dooley at his funeral and I could tell Coach Dooley was just about in tears like the rest of us.

SCAR stopped UGA and Herschel three times inside the ten with first down and less than ten yards for a TD that day.

I doubt any other team in the country could have done that.

Herschel always managed to find his way into the endzone ... but he was held to that one long damn TD run. Crap crap crap. Still breaks my heart watching this game.

UGA was a team of destiny that year.

I also wish we'd bring back the large Block C and Gamecock.

I was standing within 20 feet when 34 passed Mark Bridges, the last line of defense for South Carolina.

Laugh if y'all must, but it sounded as if 34 hit another gear.

I was also close to the fumble. This game gets overlooked by almost everyone except Dawg Fans. This game in Athens, then the one in Hooterville and Jax on television got the most pub. But this was a game from the get-go.

And there was not a nicer place to watch a game that sans enclosed and lighted Sanford in the daytime.

This game is famous for another, unknown reason. Vince always held his press conference on the hill, opposite the train tracks.

Some smart-arsed radio reporter from Atlanta asked him a question with a several-minute preamble. Dooley grinned and replied with a simple "yes." Then some 5,000 who had been listening erupted in laughter. The poor guy turned purple.

The crazy thing is just about every single national championship team there's a single play you could point to during the season that if it hadn't of gone their way they wouldn't have won the championship.

Teams like 95 Nebraska, teams that crush everyone with no threat of defeat at any point, are major exceptions.

Dollar to a hole in a doughnut he talks about this game on his show tomorrow.

Almost....

although I havne't listened to the entire show today, he DID bring up his championship that season and says he thinks the 81 team was better but they didn't get the breaks they needed... perhaps an allusion to this game, but he didn't outright mention it....

Good call though!
