So, what you're saying is that because LSU finished outside the top 10 twice and beat a top 5 team once that they were a great team? Are you an Ole Miss fan?
I think what he is saying is LSU was showing signs of comming out of the funk of the previous two coaches, thus this quote.
quote:
But they were showing signs of a sleeping giant that was starting to awaken. Dinardo deserves a lot more credit for his role in LSU's current success.
Agree!

LSU was showing signs of being a great program under Dinardo. In 1996, LSU finished the season ranked 12th in the country and in 1997, they finished the year ranked #13 in the country. In 1997, they also beat Spurrier's Florida team that finished the season ranked in the top 5. Than LSU completely regressed in his last two years there. But they were showing signs of a sleeping giant that was starting to awaken. Dinardo deserves a lot more credit for his role in LSU's current success.

Here is another in Detroit Free Press. The guy sucked before he came to LSU. LINK
And he sucked right after he left LSU!
He's one of those coaches who can do well with lots of talent.
Where are all the idiotic posters from earlier in the thread who have no idea what they're talking about.

quote:Um, yeah, that is why. They didn't need a coach. DuBose had just won a SEC championship the year before Saban was hired at LSU. That and Saban would not have been qualified to be HC at Bama at that time, having had only two barely winning seasons at Michigan State.
Yeah, that's why they weren't all over him.

quote:Right after?? He took a Miami team that had just come off a 4-12 record and led them to a 9-7 record. That generally means he did pretty damn good that year (the next year they were bad again, but they took a chance on Culpepper who didn't end up being healthy and passed on Drew Brees; if that hadn't have happened he might still be the Dolphins' coach).
And he sucked right after he left LSU!
And as far as LSU making Saban, that is true to a certain point. The man realized that LSU was a program that had everything necessary to build a consistent winner that previous coaches had failed to do. Just because Dinardo had a good year or two doesn't mean that he set things up for someone else to run with it, just like it doesn't mean that because the team has a lot going for it (location, local talent, lack of in-state competition) it's easy to sustain success. Saban was able to do it and left Miles in a position to build on it, which makes sense that Miles has built upon that to create a team that is much better than what he inherited. If Saban had left to take over Vandy then yeah he wouldn't have had the same record so going to LSU enabled him to do what he does best. It was a mutually beneficial hire and it's ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

Saban's last year at LSU after winning a NC...
How he left things:
1- Miraculous come from two scores down with less than 6 minutes to beat Oregon St at home.
2- Got drilled by Georgia. Over 20 points I believe.
3-Came from behind to beat Troy at home (they were leading with 1:25 left in the game.
4- Gave up a 65 yard pass play to end the bowl game against Iowa in the Cap one bowl. (Sabans last game)
LSU would not lose to another non SEC team for nearly 5 years after.

What were Les's accomplishments in the two years after his NC, genius?

How would we fall off with all the recruits returning, with the new recruiting processes he put in place, the discipline he instilled, the winning attitude, the beat your arse mentality on the field (I could go on)? Disagree, he started the process, if you don't see that - you're just blinded by hatred.

Same as Saban's - no championships and 1-1 in bowl games.

Using that analogy, Bear Bryant built the most beautiful mansion in the south and kept it up for a long time. When he moved out, the leasing company moved in a series of families from the projects in to the property with each leaving the house in worse condition than they found it. When Saban moved in, sure, the house was standing... but it was hardly the beauty that it once was. If it weren't for him moving in, that old house was on the verge of looking like all of those beautiful Mississippi homes on 90 after Katrina came through. When you're looking at a slab of cement it doesn't matter how grand the house that stood there once was.
...and Bama can no longer sell the house, because it si forever haunted by Bryant's ghost. Bama's attmpts to exercise the house by building statues of current coaches are futile.
