SEC vs SEC games are offsetting. The strength of a league is decided in November and December. We all get 13 games in OOC play and most of us are nearly 25% done with OOC play.

It’s absolutely soon enough to start looking at how things are going.

On this date, one year ago, the SEC already had three wins against the KenPom Top 50 including against the #1 and #2 overall teams in the country.

This season we have 1, and zero against the Top 20.

I’m not saying the SEC sucks but it does appear we are headed for a weaker overall season this year compared to last season’s banner year.

I mean, you are probably not wrong as last year's SEC was historically great. It would be hard to match half of the elite 8, 2F4 participants, a national championship and a stellar OOC record.

Raise your hand if you had Florida winning the natty last year a year ago at this time.

OP, it only looks down to you because auburn isn't gong to be as good.

Well it’s not easy to be SEC Champs, a 1-seed in the Tournament, and a participant in the Final Four every season.

With that said, Auburn should still have a good team this season.

Once again, the schedule is brutal. Last season, Auburn faced the #1, #2, #11, #15, #31, #37, and #54 teams in the country all in OOC play. We went an impressive 6-1 in those games, despite playing none of them at home.

This year we will face the #1, #5, #11, #15, #23, #57 and likely one more top team in OOC play. If we can go 3-4 I’ll be pleased considering our roster turnover from last season.

I think Auburn is going to be in the 7-10 seed range this year. We’ll see.

Alabama is looking great

Bama looks good. Not sure I’d call a team that is negative in rebounding through three games “great”.

KenPom is uncannily accurate, and while it takes awhile for their metric to totally work itself out, they historically have been very good at pegging teams for how good they are early on.

Bama is currently #24 in KenPom… 5th in the SEC. KenPom is strangely bullish on Vanderbilt, rating them 12th in the nation and 3rd in the SEC right now. Will be fascinating to see if they were correct in a few weeks.

Bama has a home loss to #5 Purdue and a road win over #22 St John’s. Yes, Bama is a good team but I think they are not quite as good as last year which seems to be the theme with about 12-13 SEC squads this year.

Way too early to make that assertion.

When you’re already 16% finished with OOC play, it is absolutely the time to start looking at how things are going. That’s a decent sample size. And as I said earlier, the strength of a league is measured only by OOC success.

The good news is we have zero bad losses yet, so that’s huge.

Yeah no kidding. Not sure that will be replicated again anytime soon. It’s like the entire league peaked in the same season. Even South Carolina and LSU were pretty good last year… it’s just that someone has to be at the bottom. Both of those teams would have competed for NCAA tournament births in lesser conferences.

it was gonna be very hard to eclipse what the SEC did last season especially in the non conf

plus you lost one of the best coaches in the league right before the season

gonna take some time for most sec teams with so many new players in key spots across the conference

I think Pope is gonna feel the heat this season
Auburn gonna struggle under baby Pearl
Bama is same old thing, live and die by the 3, can they put it all together once the tourney gets here - you have to credit Oats with the non conf schedule he plays though
Fla backcourt looks bad
Will be the same old Tenn and Ark - ride the Barnes/Calipari rollercoaster

I don't know if the conference is down so much as last year was a historically good season for the SEC in the NonCon schedule. Might not be duplicated again for a very very long time.

Can't judge a season that ends in late March/early April in mid November.

Good thing y'all rallied in overtime against Bethune-Cookman.

We've played 3 games, got about 30 more to go. These days, there is often tremendous roster turnover each year, and it takes time to mold the new players into a cohesive team.

If you want to make predictions on that body of work, knock yourself out. I'll wait for a bit more data.

Has Aubbie played a rank team yet?

Kudos to Bama going into the Lions den with two top 5 games already.

No, we generally play a weak OOC schedule.

We play #1 this weekend… and we also play the same Purdue team you played last night in a few weeks up in Indy.

Not to mention, Arizona, Michigan, Oregon, NC State, etc.

OP updates with games through the weekend… stats have gotten worse.

We’ve now played 28% of all OOC games we’ll play all year until March, so that’s absolutely a large enough sample.

This league will be very competitive. Probably zero truly terrible teams. Last year we got 14 SEC teams into the field because of our OOC performances. I think we’re looking at 9-11 teams this season.
